Melonwood: Home Decor and Lighting
A supplier of Indonesian furniture and home decor items, Melonwoods offers an extensive range of solid-wood furniture and home accessories, including light fixtures – all at great prices.
Here, the Durban-based company offers advice for selecting the correct lighting for your room to make your decor shine.
Start with a plan
A lighting plan… When it comes to lighting, it’s not just about fixtures. Placement, quantity, light colour and more must be taken into account to ensure your space is functional and comfortable.
Luckily, Melonwoods offer free virtual assessments and design services to create the space of your dreams. Plus, their lighting affiliate, Springlights, can help customers with “selecting or manufacturing creative, effective and trusted lighting products for their home or project”.
“The correct choice of lighting solution for each room will create the right kind of ambience, adding both style and value to your home,” explains Springlights. “We will give you technical and creative advice from the very start of your project and work with you until completion. In this way, you benefit from our wealth of knowledge throughout the duration of your project.”

Layer your lighting
A good design consists of various light sources that function independently but work together to create the desired ambience.
Most rooms require overhead ceiling lighting for overall illumination, task lighting, like a reading light for instance, and mood lighting – think a beautiful floor or table lamp.
Get the correct colour bulb
Another important thing to keep in mind is that bulbs emit different colours at different temperatures. For instance, some bulbs give off a warm, yellow glow similar to daylight while others have a cooler, blue-ish light.
“Lighting and lighting bulb choice creates different effects in different rooms,” explains Springlights. “It will enhance the colour of your decor, provide warmth and atmosphere and can be used to separate and easily identify different zones within your home.”
Choose a statement design
Lighting fixtures are a wonderful way of introducing some flair into your decor scheme, so don’t be afraid to opt for a statement-making chandelier, for instance, that can serve as a focal point in a room.
Don’t be afraid to customise
If you can’t find a lighting fixture that perfectly suits your space, Melonwoods and Spotlight can help you by designing and manufacturing a bespoke piece that captures your style.
