Hoi P’loy Made with Intention: Timeless Brass Lighting & Hardware
Hugo Hotspot / Darwin Dome Pendant / Slim Shady Wall Light
Hoi P’loy brass lighting has been at the heart of Hoi P’loy since the studio began in 2013 with a simple focus: introducing traditional carbon-filament light bulbs to the South African market. As demand grew, the studio expanded into designing lighting components and developing a bespoke lighting range that balanced technical precision with a strong sense of design. More than a decade later, Hoi P’loy continues to create products that celebrate craftsmanship, functionality, and lasting quality.
Drawing on years of expertise in machining solid brass, the studio began exploring new ways to apply this timeless material, leading to the development of a refined hardware range. The Harper Hex Handle collection is characterised by clean geometric forms, chamfered edges, and a tactile, substantial feel. Each handle is machined from solid brass and designed to age beautifully, developing a natural patina that reflects years of everyday use. The range also includes custom name plaques, push plates, and air vents, offering thoughtful finishing details for both contemporary and traditional interiors.
The same philosophy of creating items that last inspired the creation of Nat & Mae, Hoi P’loy’s premium brass stationery brand. Named after the founders’ children, the collection is rooted in the belief that everyday objects should be be made to last a lifetime and beyond. In an increasingly digital world, Nat & Mae celebrates the tactile experience of writing, sketching, and journalling by hand, creating heirloom-quality pieces intended to be used, cherished, and passed down through generations.
While some of its products are manufactured by partners internationally, the majority of Hoi P’loy brass lighting, custom-designed lights, fittings, and components are manufactured in Cape Town. Working from a repurposed Salt River factory, Hoi P’loy keeps design, manufacturing, and distribution under one roof, maintaining a close connection between the original idea, the making process, and the finished piece. Across lighting, hardware, and stationery, the studio produces items with a story – locally made, thoughtfully crafted, and designed to last.
