Willowlamp Faraway Tree: The Iconic Sculptural Chandelier Inspired by Nature and Storytelling
Some designs begin as a single idea and go on to define an entire collection. Such is the story of Willowlamp’s Faraway Tree, the original chandelier that established the visual language for one of the South African lighting studio’s most recognisable creations.
Designed by founder Adam Hoets, the Faraway Tree draws inspiration from two enduring sources: the graceful silhouette of a forest canopy and the magical world imagined by Enid Blyton. The result is a sculptural lighting piece that balances organic forms with architectural precision. A laser-cut steel frame is softened by cascading metal ball chains that appear to bow like tree branches beneath their own weight, creating a striking interpretation of nature through contemporary design.
Illumination comes from a concealed uplighter suspended beneath the chandelier, casting intricate branch-like shadows across the ceiling. Much like sunlight filtering through a woodland canopy, the effect introduces a gentle play of light and shadow that transforms the atmosphere of a room, creating interiors that feel both dramatic and serene.
While the celebrated multi-tier Enchanted Faraway Tree installations have become synonymous with grand architectural spaces, the original single-tier design offers the same sculptural beauty in a more intimate format. Available in 500mm, 750mm, and 1000mm diameters, as well as a coordinating wall sconce, the collection provides versatile solutions for residential, hospitality, and commercial interiors alike.
Every piece is handcrafted in Cape Town and tailored to its setting through a choice of suspension lengths, metal patinas, and ball chain finishes, allowing designers and homeowners to create lighting that feels uniquely personal.
More than a decorative object, the Faraway Tree demonstrates Willowlamp’s distinctive approach to lighting design, where craftsmanship, storytelling, and nature converge. It is a reminder that the most memorable interiors are often shaped not only by the light they provide, but by the atmosphere they create and the stories they quietly tell.
