How WB Lighting Transforms Poetry Stores
Lighting can completely change how a retail interior feels. It can draw the eye towards a beautifully displayed collection, bring texture and material to life, create moments of intimacy and subtly guide the way customers move through a space. At the new Poetry Store at Canal Work, WB Lighting shows just how important that role can be. Designed by Dakota Design, the interior brings together considered materials, elegant detailing and carefully curated displays, with lighting forming an integral part of how each element is seen.
Rather than treating illumination as something to add once the interior was complete, lighting designer Walter Ritson and WB Lighting approached it as part of the store’s overall architecture and atmosphere.
Different layers of light help establish rhythm throughout the interior. Focused illumination draws attention to merchandise and individual displays, while softer ambient lighting introduces warmth and creates a more welcoming environment. Light also plays across materials and textures, revealing details that might otherwise be lost and giving different areas of the store their own character.
It’s a careful balancing act. In a beautifully designed retail space, lighting needs to do its job without becoming the first thing you notice. Here, it works quietly in the background, directing attention where it needs to go while keeping the interiors, products, and Poetry identity firmly in focus.
The project also demonstrates how much successful lighting relies on collaboration. WB Lighting worked alongside client Cape Union Mart, Dakota Design, installation team Twalo Electrical and shopfitters Jacobs Joinery to bring the completed space together.
For WB Lighting, the project is a strong example of lighting design doing more than simply brightening a store. At Poetry , it shapes mood, highlights detail. It helps turn a beautifully designed interior into a place customers want to spend time in – showing that sometimes the most effective lighting is the kind you feel before you consciously notice it.
