Versus Paint: Tips & Tricks From The Painting Experts

A simple splash of paint can transform an entire room. Choosing the right colours can be tricky, and that’s why we asked the experts from Versus Paint to share all the insider tricks to using colour the right way. Now you can rest assured that your choice of paint will bring out the very best in your space.

Here’s what they had to say…

Why does the sky look blue? How do you match the colour of the sky in paint?

The sky is not actually blue, but as the sunlight of all colours is scattered through the air, our eyes are more sensitive to blue light. The sky has different variations of blue at different times of the day. Our expert tinters at Versus will know which primary colours are used to make up a selection of sky blues.

How can I use paint to make a statement?

By manipulating colour, texture, and balance, you can make a statement by changing the atmosphere in a room.

How does colour influence interior space?

Colour is an immensely powerful tool in interior design. The amount of colour used and where it is placed creates the overall atmosphere.

What colours do you suggest in a kitchen?

Feature colours and textures create depth and can be used to make the kitchen appear more spacious. Light and soft toned colours, give a fresh airy feel, whereas dark colours make a room feel smaller and more personal.

What are the tricks of the trade for picking the right paint colour for a room, an office or exterior of the house?

Pastel tints in a bedroom create a gentle ambience and darker shades look good in an office. For the exterior of homes, medium-toned neutrals (warm or cool) are well suited to classic homes, whereas a modern home could use more than one colour to create depth.

Is it true that the colour you enjoy wearing, you usually select for the walls of your interiors?

Everyone is drawn to colours that make them feel good. Expert advice may lead you to step out of your comfort zone. And from there “YOU NEVER KNOW”.

For many of us choosing colour is easier said than done. What advice do you suggest when selecting a paint colour for an interior and the exterior?

As the same colour paint will look different on each home, I would suggest getting advice from one of our consultants. They will help you select colours that are suitable for your needs and style of home.

Once we have selected a colour then what is the process?

We offer sample pots of the colours you have chosen so that you can paint them on your walls to make 100% sure it looks right for you.

Tips for combining colours together?

Follow the 60/30/10 rule. 60% of the room should have the main colour, 30% could be a secondary colour or texture and 10 % could be another feature.

Tell us about the paint finishes available in your collection?

Versus has so many beautiful finishes for interior and exterior. Visit our showroom where you will be able to see and feel the many colours and textures that can each be adjusted to suit your needs. Alternatively you can find Versus’ products on www.versuspaint.co.za.

I love colour but I’m scared to experiment (a lot of us feel the same). What advice would you suggest for someone who would like to experiment with colour but is scared?

You can start by placing the feature walls in the 10% category, or by using it on walls that are less visible.

When selecting colours for a bedroom can one be free and wild … or should one stick to the same colour tone used in the rest of the interior?

Not necessarily, just try to keep the same theme throughout, even though it may be different colours.

Do you offer professional colour consultations and how does one prepare when having a consultation with Versus Paint?

Yes, we do offer professional colour consultations. It would be helpful to have samples of your flooring, cabinetry and fabrics colours.

How do you deal with a client who has no clue what they want?

You would get expert advice from one of our colour consultants, who would visit your home, showing you hand-painted brush outs. These will indicate the exact colour as opposed to computerised colour cards which are only an indication.

What are your personal favourite colours to select from your collection?

I have so many favourite colours, so when consulting with a client I like to incorporate their ideas. Colour should tell a story about the owner of the home.

What are some steps a painter should take before starting to paint a room?

Make sure that you have all the correct materials and tools to complete the job. If not, you are likely to experience delays or the use of incorrect paint techniques.

What is the first thing a painter should do when applying a new layer of paint over a wall?

Preparation of the surfaces is of the utmost importance because even the best quality paint will not bind correctly to a poorly prepared surface. Guarantees from most paint companies will fall away if not done correctly.

What are some differences when using a paintbrush instead of a roller?

Different surfaces, as well as products, require specific applications. Classic rollers are generally used on large rough or smooth surfaces. Foam rollers are very suitable when painting with enamels and brushes are very handy for small spaces, cutting and intricate work.

And there you have it – all the info to help you – and me – make the most of our space with Versus Paint.
