Transform a cherished family home into a space for the future with Kim Williams

When a working mother in the Southern Suburbs decided to renovate her family home, she wanted to create a space that would reflect the next chapter of her life. With no need to worry about wet feet from the pool or playful puppies, she wanted a place where her children could come back and share in her joy.

To assist with the project, she sought out the expertise of Kim Williams,a top Cape Town interior designer, behaviour specialist, and owner of the Kim Williams Design studio. kim-williams-hanging-art-kenilworthThe Brief

The project brief was to create a classic contemporary neutral interior that aligned with the architectural design of the house and the style of the suburb. The aim was to design a space that felt both luxurious and comfortable, with black and white hues and a muted shade of teal in the bedroom to add a personal touch. Additionally, repurposing existing pieces and layering with newer investment pieces was a key component of the brief.kim-williams-dining-kenilworthAddressing Issues

To make the house more suitable for large family gatherings and the lifestyle the client envisaged, several issues had to be tackled. The space’s canvas needed tweaking, dated finishes had to be replaced, and the entrance had to be opened up. Since the house was built decades ago, the fireplaces and flooring were outdated, which presented additional challenges. However, the biggest obstacle was navigating the awkward layout of the house to create the required functionality.kim-williams-hanging-art-kenilworthModifications

Kim worked her magic and made a few changes to the living space, transforming it into an elegant and welcoming environment. Here are the modifications she made:

  • Installed a beautiful wooden floor over the existing tiles, creating a fresh canvas for the design
  • Opened up the entrance by removing the dining room doors, making it more inviting
  • Eliminated the sliding doors that closed off the kitchen, fully incorporating it into the design
  • Relocated and centred the fireplace in the TV lounge
  • Created a subtle feature wall in the TV lounge
  • Retiled the fireplace and added a stunning marble slab to the entertainment area
  • Rearranged the dining, kitchen, and entertainment areas to create specific sections for conversations, dining, and entertaining
  • Replaced all handles in the home, upgrading the existing cabinetry, particularly in the kitchen
  • Combined texture to create layer and interest to the space
  • Achieved visual depth by combining textures and creating layers
  • Chose a classic, neutral colour palette that complemented the client’s personality and taste

Lighting played a crucial role in the design of the space. By removing outdated downlights and replacing them with LED technology, unnecessary lighting was eliminated while wall lights were added to create an ambient and visually appealing atmosphere.kim-williams-cover-image-lampsStudy

In order to create more space and a better layout in the study, Kim removed the old cabinetry and installed built-in desks and storage in strategic locations. To make the space more pet-friendly, a dog bed was placed under the window so that the family’s furry friends can bask in the sunlight while our client works. Additionally, a memory wall was created to the left of the room. Oak shelving was specifically crafted to display photos and provide a place for memories to live on.kim-williams-bedroom-kenilworthMain Bedroom

The main bedroom was the space that most delighted the client. Kim swung the bed to face the mountain and created a dressing room behind the bed area as well adding a space for morning coffee. Additions of gold, antique mirror, textured wallpaper, and lighting delivered the ambiance and functionality that the client dreamed of.To read more on this and other projects by Kim Williams, sign-up for her blog at www.kimwilliams.co.za or follow her on Facebook and Instagram @kim_williams_design.kim-williams-bedroom-kenilworth
