David Hicks: The Architecture of Decorative Minimalism
St Georges Road
For more than two decades, Australian designer David Hicks has shaped the visual language of contemporary interiors with a signature approach that balances architectural clarity with decorative depth. As Founder and Creative Director of his eponymous studio, Hicks has become synonymous with a refined design philosophy—one grounded in precision, materiality, and timeless sophistication.
Over the course of a 25-year career, Hicks has cultivated a body of work that spans luxury residences, boutique developments, flagship retail environments, hospitality venues, and more than 800 high-end apartments. His interiors are recognised not only for their aesthetic restraint, but for the emotional resonance they evoke: spaces that feel composed, enduring, and deeply considered.

The foundations of Hicks’ creative vision were formed early. Childhood years spent immersed in imaginative exploration of form, structure, and landscape fostered an instinctive understanding of balance and composition. Influenced by time spent living in Malaysia, he developed a heightened sensitivity to contrast, texture, and material richness—qualities that continue to define his work today.
Although initially drawn to architecture, Hicks ultimately found his creative voice in interior design, captivated by its intimacy and expressive potential. Early professional experience across the retail and hospitality sectors sharpened his understanding of spatial planning and brand storytelling, laying the groundwork for what would become his distinctive aesthetic: refined, rational, and richly layered.
Following completion of a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design (Honours) at RMIT University, Hicks contributed to a series of luxury projects that quickly established his reputation for elegant, highly resolved interiors. By his mid-twenties, he had launched his own studio, setting in motion a practice that would evolve into one of Australia’s most influential design firms.

While his early work embraced a more minimalist sensibility, Hicks’ design language has evolved into what he describes as “decorative minimalism”—a sophisticated interplay of architectural structure, symmetry, sculptural form, and expressive detailing. Whether through bold material contrasts, curated furnishings, or finely tuned spatial rhythm, each project is guided by a philosophy that privileges timelessness over trend and restraint over excess.
Yet Hicks’ contribution to contemporary design extends beyond aesthetics alone. His approach is both intuitive and intellectual, informed by decades of experience and an enduring commitment to evolution within the discipline.
“After 25 years, I still feel driven by the same creative energy that launched my career. Design has changed dramatically, and I’ve grown with it—refining my practice, responding to the times, but staying true to the core of what makes a space exceptional. It’s a privilege to still be doing work that inspires others, and to help shape what design looks like now and into the future.”
Building legacy
Today, the studio remains at the forefront of Australian interior design, celebrated for its enduring style, thoughtful execution, and unwavering attention to detail. At the heart of David Hicks’ legacy is a belief that design should not merely impress, but enrich the way people live—creating spaces that are not only beautiful, but built to endure.
