Maldini | Qeeboo’s Kong Collection Makes a Statement
Some lights are designed to disappear quietly into a room. Kong was never going to be one of them.
Part gorilla, part sculpture and part functional lighting, Qeeboo’s Kong Collection, available through Maldini Furniture in South Africa, brings a wonderfully unexpected sense of theatre to contemporary interiors. Designed by Stefano Giovannoni, the imposing figure holds a torch aloft, turning a practical source of illumination into something closer to an art piece, and an almost guaranteed conversation starter.
It is an approach that feels entirely at home in the world of Qeeboo. Founded in Milan by Giovannoni, the Italian design brand has built a reputation for furniture, lighting and objects that sit somewhere between design and fantasy. Familiar forms are exaggerated, reimagined and often given a playful twist, resulting in pieces with plenty of personality.
Kong is perhaps one of the clearest expressions of that thinking. The full-size version has an adjustable arm, allowing its beam of light to be directed at different angles, and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Scale is very much part of its appeal. Place it in an entrance hall, contemporary living room or entertainment space, and it immediately changes the mood; in a hotel lobby, restaurant or terrace, it becomes part of the visual identity of the space itself.
For those who love the idea but don’t quite have room for a gorilla of such proportions, there’s Kong XS. The smaller version translates the distinctive silhouette into a table lamp for indoor use, bringing the same humour and sculptural quality to a console, side table or desk.
Kong XS Velvet Finish adds another dimension. Standing 53 cm high, its velvet-effect surface softens the visual character of the piece while retaining the adjustable lighting arm. It is still unmistakably Kong, just in a more tactile guise.
In South Africa, Qeeboo is available exclusively through Maldini Furniture. Established in 2001, Maldini has spent more than two decades bringing contemporary Italian furniture to residential, corporate and hospitality interiors, with a portfolio selected for its craftsmanship, individuality and strong design identity.
Qeeboo introduces a particularly playful side to that offering, spanning sculptural lighting, furniture, accessories and outdoor pieces created for spaces that aren’t afraid of a little self-expression.
And Kong certainly isn’t shy. Whether standing guard in a dramatic entrance or lighting up a tabletop in XS form, it proves that sometimes the most memorable interiors simply need one piece willing to steal the show.
