Rhino Décor: The Story Behind Wooden World Map Wall Art

In the quiet coastal village of Al Hamra in Ras al-Khaimah, a simple decorative purchase would unknowingly become the foundation of an inspired design concept that now defines the identity of Rhino Décor.

While working abroad on contract in the UAE, the founder of Rhino Décor purchased a wooden world map puzzle from Enjoy The Wood, a Ukrainian company celebrated for its artistic wooden wall installations. Once mounted against the balcony wall of an apartment overlooking the endless blue of the Arabian Sea, the map became far more than a decorative feature. It transformed the atmosphere entirely — tactile, immersive, and quietly captivating.

The artwork soon evolved into a daily point of fascination. There was something magnetic about the layered wooden continents, the intricate islands, and the visual storytelling embedded in the piece. It invited interaction. It encouraged curiosity. It made the world feel both expansive and deeply connected.

When the overseas contract eventually came to an end and the journey home to Cape Town began, leaving the artwork behind was never truly an option. Every individual piece was carefully removed, meticulously packed away, and transported back to South Africa — not merely as décor, but as something personally meaningful.

Back home, however, a new challenge emerged. Reinstalling a map composed of 196 countries and countless islands proved daunting, especially amid uncertainty about how long the family would remain in their current home. It was within this moment of practicality and reflection that a transformative idea surfaced: what if a world map installation could exist as a single, transportable artwork — effortless to mount, easy to relocate, yet striking enough to become the defining centrepiece of a space?

That question awakened the engineer’s mind behind the brand.

What followed was an intensive exploration into merging art with intelligent functionality. The breakthrough came through the integration of five timepieces representing different global time zones — a symbolic reminder of humanity’s interconnectedness across continents and cultures. The map itself would be mounted onto a precision-cut 10mm clear acrylic backing, shaped into a sleek oval form that created a floating, contemporary aesthetic.

But the vision extended beyond visual appeal alone.

To deepen the experience, five informational plaques were incorporated into the design, transforming the installation into both a sophisticated statement piece and an interactive educational feature for curious minds of all ages. The finished artwork is mounted using stainless steel stand-offs, suspending it 25mm away from the wall to create a subtle shadow line that shifts beautifully throughout the day as light moves across the room. The result is a dynamic sense of depth, dimension, and movement.

What ultimately defines the Rhino Décor concept is its remarkable customisability. From the style and colour of the clocks to the detailing of the plaques and the selection of three distinctive wood finishes, each installation can be tailored to complement the personality, palette, and atmosphere of its environment.

Even now, the creator still finds moments to stand before the piece for hours at a time — tracing continents, rediscovering countries and capitals, and admiring the craftsmanship that transformed a fleeting inspiration into a lasting design philosophy.

More than wall art, Rhino Décor’s Wooden World Map is a conversation piece, a learning experience, and a daily reminder of the beauty, scale, and connection of the world around us.
