What has made face brick so popular throughout the ages is its ability to be sculpted into just about any form imaginable. From ornate cathedrals and churches to towering sky scrapers, this humble building material is extremely malleable.
And this malleability is once again evidenced in a structure as simple as the contemporary home. Finding yet another new form in current day design, face brick is undoubtedly here to stay.
Browse through the three designs below to see how contemporary face brick homes are taking shape and moving away from box-like profiles to embrace playful patterning and geometric segments.
Extruded Elegance

Featuring the striking contrast of black metal and face brick, this house by Kreis Grennan Architecture showcases the subtle brilliance and restraint of contemporary design. The extruded walls with tapered edges work to add interest to the exterior structure, yet remain rooted in the spirit of simplicity.
An Asymmetrical Adaptation

Architectural firm, Patel Taylor, have added a fresh new take on traditional English almshouses with this design. Moving away from the pitched roof and harsh, sudden angles, this contemporary face brick home draws attention with its dominant asymmetric chimney, sleek single bay windows and cheery red hues.
Perfected Protrusions

Demonstrating an element of playfulness – seen in many contemporary face brick homes – this geometric Mexican home, by architectural firms Proyecto Cafeina and Estudio Tecalli, is an excellent example of what can be achieved with protruded brickwork. We’re not sure about you, but we’re crazy about the split gabled-roof façade!
