At Home with Sofia Vergara
It comes as little surprise that when Sofia Vergara started work on her palatial Beverly Park home, she did so with friends and family in mind.
Perhaps best known for her role in Modern Family, the actress-producer worked closely with designer Ohara Davies-Gaetano to transform what she describes as “a castle in Transylvania with arches on top of arches, all with columns” into something “homey and comfortable, a place where people would want to hang out and relax,” she says.
Although the architectural details left much to be desired, Sofia knew the property was the one for her the moment she saw it.
“The layout was perfect, and I loved that you could see the landscape from every room, even though there wasn’t much of a garden to look at yet,” she says. “I knew what I would do to make it my own.”
Cue Ohara Davies-Gaetano. Sofia saw the designer’s work on Instagram and, the rest, as they say, is history.
“I called her, we clicked, and I fell in love with her ideas,” the actor recollects. “When I handed her my inspiration folder, I realised most of the images were hers.”
Ideas included “a home that felt ethereal yet grounded, something fresh, clean, and bright, with lots of great antiques that added patina and warmth to the architecture,” explains Ohara. “It had to feel layered and curated. Sofía wanted to tell a particular story.”
And luckily for Sofia, her story had a happy ending – a very happy ending.
Ohara was able to source multiple antiques from Sweden, Spain, France, and Italy for a layered, lived-in look in hushed tones.
“Every room has special flourishes to add depth and interest to the composition,” the designer notes. “We really focused on decorative lighting to underscore the emotion and essence of the house,” she adds.
“My friends from Colombia find any excuse to visit,” Sofia says of the remodelled property. “There’s just something about this place that makes guests want to stay. It’s special. I still wake up every day thinking, I can’t believe this is my life.”
