Its owner spent childhood holidays wandering Lamu barefoot, sailing on dhows and absorbing the rhythms of a place without cars or noise. Years later, a plot overlooking the coast offered the opportunity to create a home of her own, one that would capture those memories without simply recreating the architecture of the past.

House E takes a distinctly contemporary approach. Rather than the traditional Makuti roof associated with the island, its architecture is defined by straight lines and a collection of cubic forms that follow the rise and fall of the dunes. Raw concrete and stone meet timber and reed, while the building remains almost invisible from the beach below.

Yet there is nothing rigid about life inside. Rooms spill onto terraces and into gardens, some without doors at all, allowing the East African light, sea air and surrounding greenery to move freely through the house. Living and dining spaces, six bedrooms and bathrooms, generous terraces and a 13-metre swimming pool maintain a constant connection with the sea and nearby canal.

Nature softens the architecture at every turn. Bougainvillaea and passion fruit climb through the spaces, rooftop gardens overflow with succulents and cacti, and papaya, mango and palm trees mingle with a vegetable garden producing everything from aubergines to watermelons.
