Roche Bobois Zungueira Suspension Lamp: An African Story

The Zungueira suspension lamp: An African Story Reimagined Through Light

Some pieces of furniture and lighting are designed to simply fill a space. Others carry a story.

The Zungueira suspension designed for Roche Bobois is a sculptural light that connects contemporary design with African culture, a craftsmanship story that begins in Angola but can feel remarkably close to home in South Africa.

The inspiration comes from the Zungueiras, the women street vendors of Angola who traditionally carry their wares balanced on their heads as they move through the streets. Their distinctive silhouettes, which are upright, graceful and strong, became the starting point for the design.

Throughout the day, the Zungueiras carry their baskets with their heads held high, moving beneath the sun without losing their balance. It is this sense of movement, posture and quiet strength that Angolan designer Valdina Manuel translated into the elegant, elongated form of the Zungueira suspension.

And there is an interesting South African connection to the story.

Valdina Manuel was the winner of a prize at the 8th Roche Bobois Design Award, held in Johannesburg in May 2022. The competition explored the theme “New sources of light, new resources for lighting”, which intended to challenge designers to rethink how light could be expressed through materials, form and new ideas.

The result is a lighting collection that feels deeply rooted in Africa while speaking the language of contemporary international design.

Why does it feel so relevant to South Africa?

Perhaps because the story doesn’t feel distant. Across Southern Africa, we are surrounded by visual references to craft, natural materials, handmade objects and the everyday ingenuity of people who create, carry, trade and work with what is available to them.

The Zungueira takes one of those everyday African visual narratives and transforms it into a refined design object. The result is neither a literal reproduction of traditional African craft nor a piece that feels disconnected from its origins. Instead, it sits somewhere in between: a contemporary interpretation of an African story. That makes it particularly interesting for South African interiors, where there is an increasing appreciation for spaces that feel personal, considered and connected to place.

Look closely and you’ll find another layer

Each Zungueira pendant is composed of the same three fundamental elements, but these elements are arranged and expressed through different materials.

The natural or black wicker introduces texture and an organic quality, while the other components bring a more refined, contemporary character. The glass is blown in Portugal, adding another layer to the story of the piece: an African-inspired concept brought to life through international craftsmanship.

A piece that feels at home here

For South Africans, there is something particularly satisfying about seeing African stories represented in luxury design, not as decoration, but as the starting point for the design itself.

The Zungueira reminds us that inspiration does not always have to come from somewhere far away. Some of the most compelling design stories are already embedded in the continent around us, in its people, its landscapes, its traditions and its everyday life.

The Zungueira simply gives one of those stories a new form.
