Componibili: The Timeless Design Icon That Continues to Shape Modern Living | Kartell
Few products in the history of design have achieved the enduring relevance of Kartell’s Componibili. Instantly recognisable through its cylindrical form and sliding doors, the modular storage system has remained in continuous production since its debut in 1967, proving that truly exceptional design rarely dates.
Created by pioneering Italian architect and designer Anna Castelli Ferrieri, Componibili emerged during a period of remarkable innovation in post-war Europe. As one of the first women in Italy to qualify as an architect, Castelli Ferrieri was instrumental in shaping the future of industrial design. Her work with Kartell helped redefine the role of plastics in contemporary living, demonstrating that functional objects could also be sophisticated, elegant, and beautifully designed.
Originally launched at the Salone del Mobile in Milan as the “Mobili 4970/84”, Componibili responded to a growing demand for flexible living solutions. Modern homes were becoming more compact and adaptable, requiring furniture that could perform multiple functions while maintaining a clean, contemporary aesthetic.
What made the design revolutionary was its simplicity. Constructed from injection-moulded ABS plastic, the modular elements stacked effortlessly without the need for screws or connectors. Sliding doors replaced traditional handles, creating a smooth, uninterrupted form that felt distinctly modern. The result was a storage solution that balanced practicality with a strong visual identity.
Nearly sixty years later, those qualities remain remarkably relevant. Whether used as a bedside table, bathroom organiser, living room accent, or office storage unit, Componibili adapts effortlessly to changing lifestyles and interiors. Its versatility has contributed significantly to its longevity, allowing it to move seamlessly between generations, homes, and design movements.
Today, the collection is available in a range of glossy and matte finishes, while the core design remains largely unchanged – a testament to the strength of Castelli Ferrieri’s original vision. The fact that Componibili forms part of the permanent collections of institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris further reinforces its status as a design landmark.
More than a storage unit, Componibili represents an enduring lesson in good design: that beauty, innovation, and functionality are most powerful when they work together effortlessly.
