The Cape Town EDITION: Luxury Hotel & Design
More than six million bricks, each laid by hand. A soaring cylindrical staircase open to the sky. Bespoke furnishings, richly textured materials and an extraordinary collection of African art. The Cape Town EDITION is making its mark on the V&A Waterfront, bringing a distinctive architectural vision to one of the city’s most recognisable settings.
Marking the African debut of the international EDITION hotel brand, the new 142-room property occupies a prime position at Quay 7, overlooking the superyacht marina, with Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean providing a spectacular backdrop.
Designed by internationally acclaimed architecture studio Neri&Hu in collaboration with Cape Town-based architects, the hotel takes its inspiration from the Waterfront’s maritime history. Its long, low-slung silhouette and pitched rooflines recall the industrial warehouses that once stood on the site. At the same time, the intricately patterned brick façades give the building a wonderful sense of texture and craftsmanship.
Perhaps its most striking feature is The Drum, a soaring cylindrical space that opens to the elements above. A sculptural spiral staircase winds upwards towards an outdoor viewing platform, gradually revealing the harbour, mountains and ocean beyond. This architectural feature makes the most of Cape Town’s extraordinary setting while connecting the building to its surroundings.
Inside, the design takes on a softer, more residential character. The guestrooms and suites combine natural finishes, bespoke furniture and thoughtfully integrated joinery inspired by 19th-century travel trunks. Large windows frame the views, while a restrained palette allows the textures and materials to take centre stage.
Local craftsmanship plays an important role throughout the interiors. Custom furnishings and rugs woven by KwaZulu-Natal-based Shuttleworth Weaving introduce tactile detail, while Design Network Africa has sourced pieces from makers across the continent. Traditional Zulu ukhamba vessels sit alongside mouth-blown recycled glass from Eswatini, bringing together different materials, techniques and cultural traditions.
The hotel’s art collection is equally compelling. Curated by Cape Town’s Southern Guild, it features established and emerging African artists whose work adds another layer of personality to the spaces.
In the intimate, wood-panelled Punch Room, black-and-white photographic portraits by Zanele Muholi create a powerful visual presence. Elsewhere, Chuma Maweni’s smoke-fired ceramics bring sculptural interest to the lobby and dining areas, while Usha Seejarim’s Fading Dish Cloth, created from hundreds of wooden clothes pegs, offers an unexpected artistic detail in the spa.
The same considered approach extends to the hotel’s public spaces. The Lobby Bar has the relaxed atmosphere of a contemporary living room. At the same time, the rooftop restaurant EAVE opens onto a terrace and heated swimming pool, with sweeping views across the Waterfront. Signature restaurant Shale celebrates the Cape’s seasonal ingredients and regional wines, connecting the dining offering to its surroundings
What makes The Cape Town EDITION particularly interesting is the balance between its international design credentials and the creative influences of its South African setting. From the hand-laid brickwork to the woven rugs, sculptural ceramics and carefully selected artworks, the hotel celebrates the beauty of materials and the skill of the people who work with them.
It’s a thoughtful addition to Cape Town’s architectural landscape, where the city’s maritime past and contemporary African creativity find a new expression overlooking the harbour.
