Where Light Meets Soul: MUD Studio’s Sculptural Journey Through Form, Craft, and Place
At once grounded in craft and reaching toward the extraordinary, MUD Studio’s latest finds are a celebration of sculptural form, sustainability, and storytelling. Based in Port Alfred in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, the studio continues to shape the conversation around contemporary African design, one ceramic bead at a time.
Among its standout works is A Trip to Georgia, a tetraptych oil painting that pays homage to Georgia O’Keeffe’s surreal landscapes, reinterpreting her spirit through the layered tones of the Southern states. It’s expressive, introspective, and a surprising complement to MUD’s celebrated lighting pieces.
Sculptural lighting, after all, is what put MUD Studio on the map 18 years ago. Today, it continues to push the boundaries with showstoppers like the Coupe d’Or, a chandelier composed of thousands of recycled ceramic leaves that swirl around a steel core like wind through foliage. The Thatch Dome, by contrast, feels organic and grounded, each dome hand-shaped from recycled clay into a form that whispers of natural architecture and slow design.
Tactility reigns with the Pebbles and Acacia Spiky chandeliers, each one a lesson in texture and tone. And then there’s the Beaded Hula, a joyful dance of hand-strung beads that sways somewhere between coastal reverie and couture statement.
These are not just objects of light; they are expressions of place, material, and soul. At MUD Studio, high design meets handcraft, and the results are luminous.
