Mash.T Axis Collection: Sculptural Lighting & Furniture Design
At Mash.T Design Studio, design begins not with a finished object, but with process, experimentation, and the discipline of making. The studio’s latest release, Axis, reflects this philosophy through eight sculptural lighting and furniture pieces born directly from an apprenticeship between master artisans and emerging makers; a collection shaped as much by learning as by form itself.
Rather than approaching design through rigid outcomes, Axis evolved through months of close collaboration, observation, and material exploration within the studio. At Mash.T, apprenticeship is treated as something deeper than technical training alone. It is a way of thinking through making—understanding proportion, material behaviour, repetition, and restraint through physical engagement with craft itself.
The resulting collection carries a strong architectural clarity. Steel and mesh recur throughout the pieces, creating forms that feel simultaneously industrial, sculptural, and unexpectedly quiet in their presence.
The Trapezium Pendant introduces the collection through a commanding 1600mm linear silhouette that approaches light almost as architecture. Suspended within a room, it establishes rhythm and structure without unnecessary excess. The same language continues into the Trapezium Table Lamp and Floor Stand, where modular geometry is translated into more intimate domestic scales.
Across the Wall Sconce Series, a single form is explored in three proportions and finishes: powdered chrome, dark bronze, and gold bronze. Here, the wall itself becomes part of the composition, allowing light and material to interact more subtly within the broader architecture of a room.
Perhaps the most poetic piece within Axis is Tin Soldier, created from remnants of the production process itself. Suspended delicately by a single wire, the piece transforms leftover material into something contemplative and sculptural, reinforcing the studio’s emphasis on thoughtful making and material longevity.
Completing the collection is the Concertina Pendant—a dramatic 2100mm arrangement of steel and mesh discs unfolding rhythmically across the ceiling. Born from material experimentation, the piece balances repetition with movement, creating an installation that feels both engineered and deeply expressive.
Axis reflects Mash.T Studio’s belief that enduring design is not only about aesthetics but also about knowledge transfer, material honesty, and the quiet confidence that emerges from craftsmanship practised with intention.
