K Light: How To Light Up Your Child’s Nursery
The nursery is often one of the best rooms in the house to decorate. You may have your colour palette selected, furniture bought, and a theme all picked out. But let’s not forget an essential factor that will make the entire space work – the lighting. Here we share some tips to help you light up your child’s nursery.
Choose Soft Lighting
Babies are usually very sensitive to light, so you want to avoid harsh lighting that may disturb their slumber. Instead, soft ambient lighting is usually a better option. The goal should be to create a relaxing and calm environment for your child to rest and sleep peacefully. Bright, harsh lighting can be detrimental to achieving this goal. Our suggestion is therefore to select shaded or diffused lighting that has a soft, warm glow instead of a harsh, bright illumination in the nursery.
As a rule, try to avoid halogens and exposed bulbs in the nursery. These bright lights could make your baby anxious and uncomfortable.
Add Dimmers
If you’re doing nightly check-ins in the nursery, then you want to keep lighting to the bare minimum. Dimmers are great for lighting control without overwhelming or accidentally waking up your baby. Dimmers can also work wonderfully during a bedtime routine to set the mood for sleep at night. It’s a great way to help your little one calm down and can be a trigger that it’s time to fall asleep.
Keep Lighting Off The Floor
Floor lamps in a nursery can be hazardous, especially if there are cords or electrical parts near a crib where small baby hands can easily access these parts. As your little one grows and their inquiring minds develop too, they can easily send a floor lamp crashing to the ground. Our tip is to avoid this altogether and invest in lighting that tiny fingers cannot reach!
Create Layered Lighting
You’re dreaming of a beautifully inspired nursery, so why not invest in layered lighting to highlight all of your favourite things in the room? Not only can this accentuate all the features in your nursery, but it can also add functional light when you need it most. Instead of relying on a single overly bright ceiling light, use a number of different fixtures to add illumination to your nursery. We suggest at least three points of light in the nursery, such as a ceiling fixture, changing table light, and a reading lamp or wall sconce. By keeping your choices task-oriented, you’ll be sure to have access to light in various ways when you need it most.
