From North Carolina To Berlin With Willowlamp

Today we’re shining a spotlight on lighting innovation with South African lighting brand willowlamp. The team continues to take the world by storm with a gorgeous new lighting installation in North Carolina. Here we share some of their amazing projects as well as some interesting and extraordinary light festivals from around the globe.

Marriot Magic

After much anticipation, the first JW Marriott in Charlotte, North Carolina celebrated its grand opening on 18 August 2021. The upscale hotel is described as an urban luxury retreat. In addition to boasting an impressive rooftop bar and pool, oyster bar, Spa by JW, and an authentic restaurant, it also houses a custom Willowlamp!

For this project, the team reconceptualised the very first Mandala design, which graces the Liwa Suites hotel in the UAE. However, instead of being circular like the original version, it takes the form of a long, narrow ellipse. This commission was no easy feat because of the piece’s large scale – it required 26 cubic meters of hanging space and weighs over a tonne!

A Brighter Berlin

The recent Festival of Lights held in Berlin in September called for more sustainability, togetherness, humanity, mindfulness, and preservation of cultural diversity. For 10 days, almost 70 buildings, including some of Berlin’s most famous and historical landmarks, such as the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Cathedral and Funkturm, were transformed through striking, colourful and engaging light projections and video art.

The Tree of Ténéré takes root

Named after the most isolated tree on Earth, DRIFT’s Tree of Ténéré light sculpture symbolizes life flourishing in the most difficult of circumstances. Only ever seen before at Burning Man in 2017, the sculpture is set to take permanent root in Ellum, Texas. This interactive piece explores the inherent connectivity of nature and technology and simulates the entire natural growth of a tree. The speed, intensity and colour of the light react to the public and the surroundings to create a tree that is unique to its location and forms a place where people come together to pursue emotional resonance.

Calling all creatives

Spier has announced the fourth edition of Spier Light Art to take place in 2022! This edition will celebrate people’s unflinching resilience, as well as reflect on enchantment and exuberance. Spier is inviting designers, architects, and light, sound and video artists, as well as students and institutions, to submit expressions of interest for projects and video-based artworks that celebrate the triumph of the human spirit. The 2022 exhibition will take place throughout the historic wine farm from 17 March to 18 April 2022.
