De Ponti Touch Light by Hoi P’loy Recognised
Hoi P’loy’s De Ponti Touch Light has been shortlisted for Concept Product Design of the Year at the Scape Awards of Excellence, alongside a talented group of South African designers and makers.
In 2025, Hoi P’loy’s “Shard of Light” won the CTFW x VISI Design Advancement Prize for exploring 3D printing as an accessible production method: a refined product that could be downloaded, printed anywhere and combined with standardised parts.
Building on those lessons, 2026 presented Hoi P’loy with an opportunity to develop a light that integrates 3D printing into their traditional approach to manufacturing. A conscious marriage of old and new: precision techniques and materials over 100 years old, combined with technology and substrates at the cutting edge of tomorrow.
The Concept Product Design of the Year shortlist spans furniture, vessels, lighting and sculptural work, featured in Scape’s Unbuilt Issue (pp. 31–35) and Shortlist Edition (pp. 62–66), with Hoi P’loy joined by Vitalli, Driaan, Ronel Jordaan, Heini Van Niekerk Architects and Meetlo Studio. Together, the projects offer a snapshot of the different approaches, materials and ideas shaping contemporary South African product design.
For Hoi P’loy, the recognition acknowledges the creative thinking behind the De Ponti Touch Light and the possibilities that opened up through experimenting with 3D printing. It reflects Hoi P’loy’s ongoing interest in bringing new technologies into its established way of making.
Creating design conversations
The Scape Awards of Excellence provide a space for designers and makers across disciplines to share new work, encouraging a broader conversation around the ideas and processes behind it. That visibility is meaningful, particularly within a local industry that continues to evolve through experimentation, collaboration and independent making.
Taking place in October, the Awards Evening will bring the shortlisted designers and makers together to celebrate their work and achievements, with the winners announced on the night. It will be a chance for the Hoi P’loy team to raise a glass to the De Ponti Touch Light, to everyone behind the shortlisted work, and to the continued momentum of South African design.
