Stone Connection: Comparing Natural vs Engineered Stone

What stone is best for your next project? The team from Stone Connection explore the similarities and differences between natural vs engineered stone…

First off, genuine natural stone is quarried from the ground and cut into slabs from its natural state. Engineered stone on the other hand is comprised of resin with crushed natural quartz and colourants. How do they compare, otherwise? Let’s take a closer look…

Appearance

Natural stone, such as granite, marble, and limestone, has unique variations and patterns that are formed over millions of years. These variations create a one-of-a-kind look that cannot be replicated. Engineered stone, such as quartz, is made from a mixture of crushed natural stone and resin, which is moulded into slabs. While some engineered stone products can mimic the look of natural stone, they often do not have the same unique variations and patterns that make natural stone so distinctive. In fact, their appearance can be described as more consistent in colour and pattern as these are create to replicate a natural feel.

Durability:

Natural stone is generally durable and can withstand heat, scratches, and stains. However, it can be porous, which means some stones can absorb liquids and stains if not sealed properly. Proper sealing will prevent this altogether. Engineered stone is also generally made to be durable with a 15-year guarantee. It does not need to be sealed and is non-porous.

Sustainable

Subsequently, natural stone offers unique capabilities with various minerals within the actual stone that add depth and character, often making it one-of-a-kind. Natural stone is also celebrated for its sustainability – it lasts a lifetime, contains no harmful chemicals and does not emit harmful radiation or gasses. Engineered stone, as mentioned, typically has a guarantee of about 15 years.

Colour

Natural stone will not fade even in direct sunlight. Engineered stone, however, does change colour when exposed to direct sunlight.
