nuuma: An Architectural Expression of Quiet Luxury
At Decorex Johannesburg 2026, nuuma presented a new expression of refined modern kitchen design through an immersive architectural installation centred around the N30 collection. Awarded Best Overall Stand, the space explored the relationship between kitchen, architecture, material, light and living through a composition defined by proportion, restraint and quiet confidence. This quiet luxury kitchen design approach brought together sophisticated materials and architectural detailing to create a considered living environment.
Rather than creating a conventional exhibition stand, nuuma approached the space as an interior environment with the atmosphere of a contemporary art gallery. A strong architectural envelope framed the installation, while its scale and openness created an almost double-volume experience within the exhibition hall. Large uninterrupted surfaces, generous openings and curved architectural forms allowed the kitchen to exist as part of a broader spatial composition rather than as an isolated product.
The N30 kitchen
At the centre of the installation, the N30 kitchen demonstrated nuuma’s approach to sophisticated material layering and understated detailing. Satin lacquer cabinetry was combined with textile weave glass doors, refined metal accents and carefully selected stone surfaces. The palette was intentionally restrained, allowing texture, shadow, light and proportion to become the defining characteristics of the space.
Curved detailing played an important role throughout the design. Rounded cabinetry, softened architectural corners and the sculptural form of the island introduced fluidity into the disciplined geometry of the installation. Fine fluting added subtle rhythm to selected surfaces, while integrated lighting was used to reveal material texture and depth rather than becoming a feature in itself.
Suspended above the island, however, a custom light installation created specifically for the show became an important sculptural counterpoint to the precision of the kitchen. Layers of fabric were formed and tensioned into an organic architectural composition, concealing the light source within and allowing a warm, diffused glow to filter through the material. Its softness contrasted with the solidity of the stone and cabinetry below, while its scale responded directly to the proportions of the island and the double-volume architecture surrounding it. More than a decorative fitting, the piece became another architectural layer within the space — part light, part sculpture and part ceiling element.
Sightlines were deliberately controlled. From outside, large architectural openings framed views into the installation, while movement through the stand gradually revealed different compositions, much like experiencing an art gallery. Objects, furniture and kitchen elements were given space to breathe, creating a sense of calm rather than visual excess.
Restraint and Luxury
For nuuma, luxury is increasingly found in this restraint. It is expressed through architectural proportion, sophisticated materials, precision detailing and the careful layering of light, texture and form.
The Decorex 2026 installation brought these ideas together as a complete living environment — a refined expression of the nuuma design language and an exploration of what modern luxury kitchen design can become when architecture, kitchen and interior are conceived as one. This quiet luxury kitchen design philosophy demonstrates how restraint, materiality and architectural thinking can redefine the contemporary kitchen.
