Milestone Kitchen: The Freestanding Kitchen Myth

milestone-kitchens

For decades we’ve accepted that kitchens have to be permanently fixed in place. But do they? Think about it – a dining table isn’t fixed to the floor, a couch isn’t attached to the wall. So why should the biggest investment, in the heart of the home, be the one piece that can never move? Milestone Kitchen challenges one of the biggest assumptions in home design: that cabinets must be fixed to the walls. In reality, they don’t. A freestanding kitchen offers flexibility without compromising on quality.

Myth: A quality kitchen has to be built in.
Reality: A freestanding kitchen offers the same functionality and quality with far greater flexibility.

Myth: Kitchen renovations are long messy processes that involve builders, dust and weeks of disruption.
Reality: Freestanding kitchen units arrive fully assembled, so installation is fast, clean and significantly less disruptive than traditional on-site cabinet construction.

Myth: It doesn’t make sense to invest in a beautiful kitchen if the homeowner is not in their forever-home.
Reality: A freestanding kitchen is an investment that can move with the homeowner.

Myth: It takes years to save up for a kitchen renovation.
Reality: Homeowners do not have to buy their freestanding kitchen all at once; they can start with the pieces they need now and add over time.

Myth: Once a kitchen is installed, the layout is fixed forever.
Reality: A kitchen can evolve as a family’s needs change, appliances change and the home evolves.

Myth: The kitchen will never need to be moved.
Reality: There will be times when homeowners need to access plumbing, electrical connections or repair damage. Freestanding units can be moved without dismantling the entire kitchen.

Myth: Fitted kitchens are easier to clean.
Reality: Traditional fitted kitchens are stuck to the floor and wall and cannot be cleaned underneath, on the sides or behind. Pest, rodent or insect issues cannot be accessed without dismantling the kitchen.

Myth: Fitted is the modern way.
Reality: Modern living increasingly moves towards practical solutions. A kitchen that can evolve with the home, is easy to maintain and clean, and can be installed with minimal disruption is therefore a future-ready solution.

Myth: Continuous worktops are more practical.
Reality: Freestanding kitchens allow individual worktops to be repaired or replaced without replacing the entire surface. If one section of a continuous worktop is damaged, replacing it can be costly.

Myth: All the worktops need to match.
Reality: Freestanding pieces allow for various worktops – wood, stainless steel and stone allow homeowners to create purpose-made workspaces for different needs and budget constraints (and have the added bonus of introducing different textures throughout the kitchen).

Myth: A homeowner has to choose between a freestanding kitchen and a built-in look.
Reality: A freestanding kitchen can be made to look built-in, on plinths and with flush sides. The difference is that despite looking fitted, each unit is self-supported and does not rely on the walls or the floor to hold it up. The difference lies beneath the surface: every cabinet is individually self-supporting.
