A kitchen renovation usually begins with the fun part: imagining new cabinetry, beautiful worktops and perhaps that island you have been saving to your inspiration folder. But before colours and finishes enter the conversation, there are a few decisions worth getting right first.

The team shares some useful dos and don’ts for creating a kitchen that looks good, works beautifully and continues to do both long after the installers have left.

Do start with the layout

Think about an ordinary day in your kitchen. Where do you prepare food? Who cooks? Does everyone somehow end up gathering around the same counter? Consider natural light, existing plumbing and the movement between the fridge, sink and hob before deciding where anything belongs.

And don’t rush this stage. A little extra planning can prevent awkward corners, insufficient worktop space and cupboards that never quite work as they should.

Do make storage work harder

Storage should be part of the design from day one. Deep drawers can make pots and pans easier to reach, while corner carousels, vertical storage and floor-to-ceiling cabinetry can make surprisingly good use of every centimetre.

Do choose materials for real life

A beautiful finish still needs to handle heat, moisture, spills and the everyday knocks of a busy kitchen. Well-made cabinet carcasses, quality hinges and easy-to-clean surfaces may not be the most glamorous items on the moodboard, but they can make an enormous difference over time.

Easylife Kitchens recommends seeing materials in person wherever possible. Opening doors, feeling finishes and comparing samples under different lighting gives you a much better idea of what you are choosing than a screen ever can.

Don’t leave lighting until last

Good lighting changes both the mood and functionality of a kitchen. Combine practical task lighting with ambient illumination and, where appropriate, a pendant or two over an island. Ventilation deserves equal attention, particularly around cooking areas.

Do be realistic about budget and timing

Decide early where you want to invest and where you are happy to compromise. Allowing sufficient time for manufacturing and professional installation can also save plenty of frustration later.

Finally, don’t let a trend make every decision. Colour, texture and statement surfaces can bring personality into the room, but they should work alongside a layout and materials that make sense for your life.
