The Living Machine: Where Wellness Becomes Design
At this year’s Salone del Mobile, a new kind of domestic luxury takes centre stage—one that moves, breathes, and quietly reshapes the idea of home. In a striking installation titled Unica Mente, Italian wellness brand Technogym reframes fitness not as equipment, but as culture—woven seamlessly into the architecture of everyday life.
Conceived as both exhibition and reflection, Unica Mente celebrates the 40-year legacy of Unica, a compact, design-led home gym that has long transcended its functional origins. Introduced in 1986, Unica redefined the domestic landscape by condensing a complete training system into just 1.5 square metres—an innovation that anticipated today’s fluid, multi-purpose interiors.
A Dialogue Between Body, Mind, and Space
Rather than presenting machinery, the installation—curated by Felice Limosani—explores the emotional and philosophical dimensions of wellness. Through a layered interplay of real portraits and AI-generated reinterpretations, it brings together 40 voices from the worlds of sport, art, and culture, each contributing to a collective narrative around discipline, intention, and awareness.
Here, wellness is no longer confined to physical transformation. It becomes immersive—an evolving relationship between the body and the environments it inhabits. Visitors are invited not simply to observe, but to engage in a moment of introspection, reflecting on how design can influence both movement and mindset.
From Object to Icon
Unica’s enduring relevance lies in its dual identity: both a piece of precision-engineered equipment and a refined design object. With over 25 exercises integrated into a single, sculptural form, it eliminates the need for multiple machines while maintaining the performance standards of a professional gym.
Its biomechanical accuracy ensures movements follow natural physiological trajectories, distributing load efficiently to enhance results and reduce injury risk. Yet beyond its technical mastery, Unica’s polished finishes, compact footprint, and architectural presence allow it to inhabit spaces traditionally reserved for art or furniture.
It is this synthesis—function elevated by form—that has secured its place in some of the world’s most considered interiors, from private residences to luxury hospitality environments. Over four decades, it has quietly shifted the perception of fitness from a scheduled activity to an integrated lifestyle ritual.
The Home as Wellness Ecosystem
Unica Mente ultimately positions the home as the new epicentre of wellbeing. In this vision, fitness is no longer compartmentalised or hidden away; it is embedded into the rhythm of daily life. A morning stretch, an afternoon reset, an evening session—each becomes part of a continuous dialogue between space and self.
Extending beyond the exhibition, the project carries a social dimension: each of the 40 contributors has selected a school or institution to receive a Unica system, transforming the installation into a tangible act of shared responsibility and future investment.
Designing for a Better Life
In an era where interiors are increasingly expected to do more—adapt, perform, and inspire—Technogym’s vision feels both timely and quietly radical. Wellness, in this context, is not an addition to the home, but its foundation.
Unica Mente does not simply celebrate an object. It articulates a philosophy: that the most meaningful design is that which shapes how we live, move, and feel—every single day.
