Press-Up Industries: bespoke hardware
Manufacturers of bespoke hardware Cape Town-based, Press-Up Industries is the go-to for door knobs, door handles, cupboard handles and vintage handles.
‘Initially, we developed an exclusive yet comprehensive range of antique Edwardian and Victorian period reproduction Antique and vintage handles, cupboard handles, door handles, door knobs, escutcheons and hooks (The Classic Collection),” explains the company. “Before this range came into being, period furniture craftsmen struggled to obtain hardware to replace those broken or lost from original pieces with handles which were durable, cost-effective and pleasing to the eye. With The Classic Collection, we tried to resolve these challenges and our product grew in popularity.”
Today, their extensive collection includes several styles, from classic oval knobs with backplates in copper and brass to slim, contemporary designs in black and silver, as well as new materials and finishes such as Rust, Porcelain and Crystal/Glass door knobs and door handles. With over 35 years of experience, Press-Up Industries is also the preeminent source of information on ironmongery. Here, they introduce us to knurled handles and their unique advantages.
“Knurling refers to a pattern of straight, angled or diamond-shaped ridges on a handle’s surface. This texture provides improved grip, which is especially useful in applications where a secure hold is crucial.
‘The patterns are achieved through a specialised machining process where a pattern is rolled into the handle material. Press-Up Industries can basically add knurling to any round bar thanks to our custom approach.
“Beyond functionality, knurled handles are often chosen for their visual appeal. The textured surface can add a tactile quality and a sense of craftsmanship to the product.
“Knurled door handles are available in various finishes to match different interior aesthetics. Our common finishes include matte black, antique brass and antique copper. The finish not only enhances the handle’s appearance but also protects it from corrosion and wear.”
Customers can shop Press-Up Industries‘ beautiful knurled handles online and in-store at their Cape Town showroom and Johannesburg stockist.
