Spotlight: Meet Fiqah Cochrane From Atmosphere Furniture

“Here’s to strong women: may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.”

This weekend, we honour the women of South Africa and we celebrate those on the forefront of change in the nation. Today get to know Fiqah Cochrane from Atmosphere Furniture and we find out about her favourite things, the latest design trends and greatest influences.

How would you describe your typical day at Atmosphere Furniture?

My days are spent juggling various roles within the business from managing staff, dealing with suppliers, client relations and visual merchandising, which I am very passionate about. As the saying goes, “If you love what you do you won’t work a day in your life”.

If you had to describe your signature style, what would you say?

My signature style is contemporary and sophisticated with accents of opulent touches. I prefer clean lines and sleek finishes, leather, velvet and anything plush. I love the look and feel of marble / glass and beautiful luxurious fabrics and linens.

Comfort is key for me. If I don’t love it I don’t buy it. I very seldom follow trends as classic pieces are always timeless.

What’s your favourite colour combinations for interiors?

Neutral colours are a winner for me with touches of black and white. Greige is another firm favourite of mine as it suites a cool and warm colour scheme.

What is the most recent purchase you’ve made for your home?

A beautiful handwoven rug and plush fur throw. Those are my new “winter warmers” that I have treated myself with. The rug automatically adds some warmth to the space and creates a cosy and homely feel.

Which one design element, trend or furniture item can you not live without?

My Fang modular couch from Atmosphere Furniture with the feather filled cushions that just add another level of comfort and luxury.

Which designer or design has had the greatest influence and inspires you?

I have three designers who inspire me and also have had a great influence on my personal style…

  • Fashion Icon Coco Chanel with her iconic elegance.
  • Interior designers Kelly Hoppen and Kelly Wearstler – their design style and décor philosophy echo what inspires me.

What is often the most challenging part of your day?

Store revamps have proven to be the most challenging as it is time consuming and the ultimate look and feel of the store is critical.

What looks do you think we should keep an eye on for Spring and Summer from Atmosphere Furniture?

Spring /Summer will be filled with colour and much needed freshness with floral patterns and leafy greens. We are also expanding the patio range with some new product offerings.

What exciting collections do you have planned within the next year?

We are initiating a big drive to support our local small businesses. Covid has taught us some harsh lessons regarding the importance and mostly awareness of the great talent and craftsmanship that we have around us in SA.

We have planned a new slipcover collection, a studio apartment range for the “City Slickers”.

You can also expect various new wooden products incorporating natural stone, glass and steel etc as well as new homeware selections.

What’s your favourite place to dine?

One of my favourite places in Cape Town is Coco Safr in Sea Point.
