Clerkenwell Design Week is the UK’s leading design festival and took place 23-25 May 2023 in various locations around Clerkenwell in London, United Kingdom. The festival hosted 130 open showrooms and more than 200 exhibitors across 10 venues, exploring lighting and luxury design products.
While the design festival is dominated by local and European-based designers and design houses, this year’s event included a South African design studio.
Part of the LIGHT exhibition at the House of Detention, an old prison in the heart of Clerkenwell, was Studio Lloyd. Studio Lloyd is a female-owned lighting design studio based in Cape Town, which is striving for diversity within the luxury handcrafted lighting design scope. The studio incorporates the traditional technique of crochet into modern lighting and focuses on creating organic shapes within each unique design. Their designs are custom-designed handcrafted large-scale installations for the hospitality and commercial sectors.
Each exhibitor at LIGHT had limited space as the organisers made use of the old cells in the heart of the prison. Due to the limitation in space, Studio Lloyd used miniature models of their large-scale designs to showcase the various shapes and suspension methods they work with.
