A Twist in the Tale

Playful in profile, purposeful by design. NaughtOne’s Knot takes the familiar side table and gives it an unexpected turn.

There is something immediately disarming about Knot.

Perhaps it is the stem: tubular, off-centre and seemingly tied into a knot. Or perhaps it is the colour, capable of shifting the table from quiet companion to vivid punctuation mark. Either way, this is a piece that refuses to disappear politely into the background.

Designed by NaughtOne, Knot brings a fresh spin to the classic side table. Its distinctive knotted base gives the table its name, but the gesture is more than decorative. Moving the stem off-centre creates additional room beneath the tabletop, allowing a chair to tuck closer to the surface and making Knot a natural place to settle with a laptop.

It is an expressive solution to an essentially practical problem: how to make a small table work harder without making it feel like work.

THE ART OF THE OFF-CENTRE

Knot’s personality comes from an intentional imbalance.

Rather than placing its support conventionally at the centre, the design shifts it aside and turns the tubular base into a defining visual feature. The result is high-spirited, but with practical intent built into the silhouette.

That combination gives Knot an easy versatility across office, education and communal environments. It can create a small working spot, sit alongside a chair or become a colourful accent within a larger interior.

And while the gesture may be playful, the proportions remain compact. Knot is available with either a rectangular top measuring 400 × 500mm or a 550mm-diameter circular top. Both stand at 650mm high and weigh 6.5kg.

MATERIAL, SHAPE, COLOUR

The character of Knot can change considerably depending on how it is specified.

Two tabletop shapes establish the starting point: rectangular or circular. From there, surfaces range from white or black MFMDF to Forbo Lino, oak veneer and walnut veneer, each detailed with a reverse chamfer edge.

Forbo Lino is offered in eight colours, while the powder-coated base can move well beyond standard white and black through NaughtOne’s RAL palette.

The possibilities allow Knot to change register with its surroundings: a bright colour pop, a deliberate hotspot or something altogether quieter in a cool neutral.

CHOICE, BUILT IN

For NaughtOne, choice is part of the proposition.

Knot can be specified across an extensive combination of finishes, giving the same distinctive form markedly different expressions. Oak or walnut can bring the tabletop into warmer territory; monochrome finishes can make the silhouette more graphic; saturated colour can turn the base itself into the focal point.

The architecture of the piece stays recognisable throughout. What changes is its voice.

THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE FORM

For the rectangular-table configuration used in NaughtOne’s product sustainability statement, the material composition is predominantly mild steel and medium-density fibreboard: 54.2% mild steel, 45.71% medium-density fibreboard and 0.09% zinc-plated mild steel.

The same example is stated as 54.3% recyclable, 45.7% reusable and containing 44.5% recycled content.

Its life-cycle assessment records cradle-to-gate emissions of 17.93 kg CO₂e, comprising 17.45 kg CO₂e from raw materials, 0.32 from energy consumption, 0.09 from waste and 0.07 from upstream transportation.

Knot does not reinvent the side table by making it more complicated.

Instead, one simple move—the shift and twist of its stem—gives the piece both its visual identity and its practical advantage. The chair moves closer. The laptop finds its place. The familiar becomes slightly less familiar.

And that is Knot’s charm: a compact table with an unmistakable sense of personality, where the twist in the design is also the point of it.
