Coal Interiors Lili Range: When Custom Design Becomes a Collection
Some of the most enduring furniture designs are not created in a design studio. They begin with a conversation. The Coal Interiors Lili Range is a perfect example of this approach, demonstrating how collaboration can shape enduring furniture collections.
For Coal Interiors, the newly introduced Lili Range is the result of listening to a customer’s vision and embracing the flexibility that comes with designing and manufacturing locally.
Reimagined pieces
The story began with a custom request for one of Coal’s best-loved pieces, the Bailey TV Unit. A customer admired its proportions and functionality but envisioned a different finish for the cabinet doors. Drawing inspiration from the solid door design of the Georgie Bedside Table, Coal reimagined the Bailey with a slatted door design, creating a transformative, more contemporary look.
What started as a once-off custom project quickly attracted attention.
As the design appeared across Coal Interiors‘ platforms, the response from the community was immediate. Customers saw something familiar, yet refreshingly different. The combination of the Bailey’s balanced proportions and the refined simplicity of the solid doors resonated with those looking for a more understated aesthetic. It soon became clear that this was more than a custom commission. It was a design worth keeping.
The introduction of the Lili TV Unit marked the beginning of a new collection. It has since been joined by the Lili Bedside Table, extending the same design language into the bedroom while creating a cohesive range for the home.
An evolution in design
The evolution of the Lili Range reflects one of the advantages of local furniture design and manufacturing. Unlike mass-produced collections that remain fixed for years, locally made furniture can respond to the ideas and needs of the people who use it. Customer feedback becomes part of the creative process, allowing thoughtful adaptations to develop into permanent additions to a collection.
For Coal, every new design tells a story. In the case of the Coal Interiors Lili Range, that story began with a single customer’s request and grew into a collection that now has a place within the brand’s evolving catalogue. It is a reminder that good design is not only about creating beautiful furniture but also about listening, adapting and allowing collaboration to shape what comes next.
