Malawi Furniture
Offering original handmade Malawi furniture and decorative accessories directly from the country’s crafters, Malawi Furniture is a celebration of African craft and culture.
“Each of our authentic pieces takes up to 14 days to produce by a single Malawian craftsman,” explains the company.
“The Malawi Cane Chair, for instance, is an iconic piece of Malawi history and is hand-woven from 100% natural, Malawian rattan cane.
“The pieces then go through an intensive, three-day long, fumigation process, which sanitises the wood, before we import them to Cape Town, South Africa. Our strict quality control and packaging process ensures your order will arrive in perfect condition right at your door.
“The result is an authentic, high-quality, timeless feature piece that can be used in both an indoor and outdoor setting.”
Apart from the iconic Malawi Cane Chair, other popular pieces include hand-woven laundry baskets with lids, the artisanal Malawi Halfmoon Headboard, available in single, three-quarter, double, queen and king size, and a gorgeously textured Grass Carpet Hand-Weaved Mat that can be used either indoors or out (if the sealant option is chosen).
Clients can also order a Classic One or Two Seater Malawi Couch or Classic Bar Stool Chair – all carefully crafted with the greatest skill and attention to detail.
“The craftsmen we work with have really perfected these traditional designs in recent years. The artisans first build a frame, for the chair, using wood from a blue gum tree. Each chair contains natural cane fibre, bamboo and blue gum. Blue gum is locally available and is used over many platforms due to its strength.”
Once the frame is completed, the rattan cane sections are woven and added by hand, resulting in distinctive furniture pieces made with character, as well as heart as each Malawi Furniture sale helps support Malawian artisans and their families.
