Classic Revivals: Rooted in Place and South African Design

Classic Revivals furniture reflects a deep connection to South African craftsmanship and place. At the heart of this collection is the skill Classic Revivals is known for: hand carving. Every relief, facet and groove is shaped by craftsmen at the bench. They use techniques passed down through the workshop for over seventy years.

Hands that carve the stories

“We don’t borrow African motifs as decoration,” says the Classic Revivals design team. “We look at where a piece will live, who will gather around it, and what story the room is trying to tell. Then we let the carver’s hand carry that story.”

Since 1953, Classic Revivals has built furniture by hand in Lea Glen, Roodepoort. Four generations on, the family manufacturer that began with Italian craft heritage has found its most compelling voice in something closer to home: the patterns, materials and landscapes of South Africa.

A timeless collection

The carved palm sideboard brings the landscape indoors. Its doors are hand-carved in deep relief with a dense grove of palms, a nod to the coastal forests of KwaZulu-Natal. Topped with natural stone and finished with brass hardware, it pairs old-world elegance with a distinctly local sense of place.

The layered drum coffee table takes a bolder approach. Stacked tiers of rich, dark timber are banded with a hand-carved and inlaid chevron pattern, while the top is split into quartered veneers with finely reeded segments. It is a piece made for conversation, as at home in a coastal living room as in a Highveld family home.

The faceted sideboard is quieter but just as striking. Its full front is hand-carved into rows of pyramids, a rhythm that echoes the geometry of traditional basketry and beadwork. As light moves through the day, the surface shifts from soft to sculptural, turning a storage piece into a focal point.

Each piece is made to order in the Roodepoort factory, where heritage skill meets local perspective, keeping the work both timeless and distinctly South African. This approach is central to the appeal of Classic Revivals furniture. Here, traditional craftsmanship is combined with a distinctly local perspective.

“South African design has its own confidence now,” the team adds. “Our role is to make furniture that honours the people who make it and the places it ends up.”

All Classic Revivals pieces can be customised in size, timber and finish.
