Mohair Rugs & Blankets for Modern Homes | Shuttleworth Weaving
Sleek, modern homes are light, uncluttered spaces, with thoughtful finishes and often, expansive views. These elements create calm but sometimes you need a little cosy, particularly in autumn. At Shuttleworth Weaving, is this possible to add without detracting from the carefully crafted aesthetic?
Yes, introducing softness through natural yarns like mohair will bring out the best in your décor, uplifting the entire room.
Mohair is much admired for its luxurious, lustrous quality and resilience, making it ideal for home furnishings. A floor rug would help insulate sound, retard fire, resist water and stains. On your couch or bed, mohair blankets adapt to the temperature, providing warmth when the weather is cool and are light enough to use on hot nights too. Mohair is resistant to odour, does not felt and is easy to wash.
At Shuttleworth Weaving, these qualities are celebrated in expertly handcrafted rugs and blankets in many colours. A firm favourite, however, continues to be working with the off-white colour of the natural yarn.
The process begins
The mohair used can be traced to Karoo and Lesotho farms. After shearing the fleece from the Angora goats, the mohair is sorted according to quality and then processed to remove excess oils. The process of carding disentangles the clusters and forms them into continuous bands, which are then combed to transform the fibre into recognisable mohair.
The skilled staff at Shuttleworth Weaving patiently spin the fibres to create yarn, before it is dyed in wood-fired vats to the exact colours our clients require. The looms are set up and the intricate, rhythmical weaving begins.
The team can make carpets up to 9m wide and whatever length you can imagine. Mohair not only adds personality to your space, but it embeds a little of the landscape where the goats live, and the care these craftspeople put into each individually created piece, into your home.
