Hoi P’loy Introduces the Di Ponti Clock: A 3D-Printed Timepiece Blending Letterpress Craft and Italian Design Influence
Time is often measured quietly, yet the objects that mark it can carry remarkable presence. With the introduction of the Di Ponti Clock, Cape Town–based studio Hoi P’loy extends its exploration of 3D printing beyond lighting and into the rituals of everyday timekeeping.
The piece continues a design language first explored through the studio’s Shard of Light and Di Ponti Touch Light. Here, that visual vocabulary evolves into a sculptural timepiece defined by faceted geometry and a carefully balanced cylindrical form. Inspired by classic Italian industrial design – and particularly the sharp, angular character of the traditional stovetop coffee maker – the clock’s surfaces create a subtle dialogue between light, shadow and texture. Its proportions follow the golden ratio, lending the object a quiet harmony that feels both deliberate and enduring.
While the form reflects modern additive manufacturing, the details reveal another layer of craft. Rather than digitally printing the clock face, Hoi P’loy produces it in-house using a Heidelberg letterpress more than eighty years old. Ink is mixed by eye, pressure adjusted by hand, and the resulting impression carries a tactile depth that can be felt as much as seen. Each face bears slight variations – an intentional reminder of the human process behind it.
This analogue technique sits alongside the precision of 3D printing, where temperature, flow and layered construction demand their own discipline. Together, these processes represent the studio’s evolving approach: allowing traditional and contemporary methods to inform one another rather than compete.
Designed and assembled in Cape Town, the Di Ponti Clock reflects a studio committed to experimentation, patience and craft. It is not simply a device for telling time, but a small study in how thoughtful design allows old and new technologies to coexist with clarity and purpose.
