Design Joburg: A playground for industry leaders

This year, Johannesburg’s premier event, Design Joburg, will take place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 12 to 14 May 2017, showcasing the leaders in décor and design.

The show is set to become a new focus for exceptional design, quality and inspiration. Design Joburg is the perfect mix of a longstanding favourite local exhibition that highlights the best in the industry paired with the new innovators and emerging talent of South Africa.

Visitors to the show will be part of a unique audience of high end consumers as well as architects, designers, specifiers, developers, as well as multinational companies looking to source directly for their latest projects.

Rooms on View

There will be so much on offer and the show’s creative directors, Andrea Kleinloog and Megan Hesse of Anatomy Design and HK Studio, are excited and inspired to share with you some never before seen collaborative spaces, uniquely curated installations and alluring roomsets. The pair found inspiration in the stirring creativity of flower artist Makoto Azuma. As such, the main feature presentation, Rooms on View, will be their take on a ‘modern conservatory’.

Set within a space where light is considered, people can view Anatomy’s design elements and the beautiful floral structures under strong pin light. Whether just strolling through or sitting to enjoy a glass of bubbly or cup of coffee, the focus is on creating time for yourself.

Darlings

The Darlings feature space will showcase the latest designs from the ‘darlings of local design’, designers whose work epitomizes the energy and creativity that characterizes South Africa’s bright design scene right now. The line-up includes a range of top designers and renowned industry leaders from Haldane Martin, Heather Moore of Skinny laMinx, Andile Dyalvane and Zizipho Poswa of Imiso Ceramics to Andrew Dominic, Mema Design and many more from as far afield as Durban. The Sample Library

Leading Joburg based architect Joe van Rooyen will create one of the feature stands, the Sample Library, within the Collaborative Roomset section of the show in collaboration with interior designer Julia Day of Generation. The ethos of the concept is to communicate design inspired by age-old crafting… of both ideas and actual product. A space where thoughts can flow freely, this considered and timeless exhibit will encompass the quintessential elements of handmade beauty and bespoke concepts.

Other showstoppers to look forward to:

A Dinner Party

Copperleaf Studio will be participating in a unique Collaborative Roomset feature with the theme of ‘A Dinner Party’. Without giving too much away, interior designer Kelly Adami explains that they are planning an uber-luxurious entertainment space that has everything you need to keep your guests well-fed and watered without ever having or wanting to leave. Man Cave

Ditau Home, a Johannesburg based interior design company is participating in the Collaborative Roomset feature entitled ‘Man Cave’ – the ideal space for the 21st century man. The concept is an Afro-Zen style healing spa with hi-tech and sensory experiences in a relaxed, healing and naturally toned spa environment.

A Heritage Apartment

Design studio Stadium will also be a part of the collaborations of the Roomsets feature under the theme of ‘A Heritage Apartment’. Their intention is to create a space that captures the appreciation for pieces that defined the past and inform current movements.

Growing Up

You also do not want to miss the feature by Kimmy & Beat, Johannesburg based curators of all things mother and baby. Their feature entitled ‘Growing Up’ shows the transition of a space from a newborn baby nursery to a child’s bedroom. You can expect a redefining of what one usually thinks of childhood spaces.
