Step Inside Lexus RECHARGE: Decorex Joburg 2026’s Most Thought-Provoking Installation

Among the many inspiring installations at this year’s Decorex Joburg, one of the most thought-provoking doesn’t ask visitors to look harder – it invites them to slow down.

Presented by Lexus, RECHARGE reimagines one of the most overlooked spaces in the home: the garage. Traditionally associated with practicality and storage, it is transformed into a calm, contemplative environment that explores movement, stillness, and the emotional power of design. Anchored by the all-electric Lexus RZ, the installation offers a fresh perspective on how thoughtful design can shape the way we experience everyday spaces.

Designed by multidisciplinary creative Tshepo Sealetsa, RECHARGE moves beyond the idea of a conventional automotive display. Instead, it considers the garage as a place of transition – a space where both people and vehicles can pause, reset, and prepare for what comes next.

The concept was inspired by Sealetsa’s own experience of driving the Lexus RZ. Rather than focusing solely on its engineering or electric performance, he was struck by the sense of calm the vehicle created.

“What stood out wasn’t just that it’s electric,” he explains. “It was the calmness. The drive is quiet, smooth, and intentional. There’s a sense of control and refinement that doesn’t try too hard, yet still feels progressive.”

That feeling informed every aspect of the installation. Soft minimalism, flowing forms, and layered materiality create an environment that mirrors the quiet confidence of the vehicle itself. A restrained palette of neutral tones, warm lighting, and tactile finishes replaces the bold visual statements often associated with exhibition spaces, allowing visitors to experience the installation as an atmosphere rather than a display.

For Sealetsa, restraint became the defining design principle.

“With a brand like Lexus, restraint is the luxury,” he says. “Every element needed to feel considered. The intention was not to decorate the space, but to create something that feels natural, calm and immersive.”

The installation also reflects the wider themes running throughout Decorex Joburg 2026, where this year’s The Soft Life concept explores design that supports wellbeing, comfort, and more intentional ways of living. Rather than celebrating excess, it highlights the value of spaces that encourage people to slow down and reconnect with their surroundings.

Beyond the installation itself, Lexus will once again offer its concierge service for VIP guests attending the exhibition, providing collection and drop-off within a 10-kilometre radius of the Sandton Convention Centre. It’s a thoughtful extension of the brand’s philosophy, where every part of the journey is designed to feel seamless.

Whether you’re visiting for the latest interiors, architecture or design innovations, RECHARGE is set to be one of the standout installations at Decorex Joburg 2026 – a reminder that great design isn’t always about making the biggest statement. Sometimes, it’s about creating a moment of stillness.
