Ambiente Trends 2027: Three Interior Design Trends Shaping the Year Ahead

Forget choosing between minimalism and maximalism, old and new, or structure and spontaneity. Ambiente is looking to a more interesting design landscape for 2027 – one where seemingly opposing ideas are free to share the same space.

Held annually in Frankfurt, Ambiente is one of the world’s leading international trade fairs for consumer goods, bringing together the latest ideas and products across interiors, design, dining, lifestyle and hospitality. Ahead of its 2027 edition, the fair has revealed the Ambiente Trends 27+, developed by trend agency Stilbüro bora.herke.palmisano to translate developments across design, art, fashion and lifestyle into inspiration for the year ahead.

Coexistence is the guiding theme for 2027, expressed through three distinct style worlds: clear + lovely, structural + emotive and noble + fancy. Rather than asking one aesthetic to dominate, each celebrates the possibilities that emerge when contrasting ideas, materials and influences are brought together.

For those drawn to quieter interiors, clear + lovely finds beauty in simplicity without becoming overly serious. Clean forms and pale natural materials are softened by playful details, artisan surfaces and a hint of nostalgia. Japanese design principles are a key influence, while woven willow, raffia, jute, untreated wood, ceramics and glass introduce texture. Soft whites, apricot, caramel and green are punctuated by flashes of sky blue and glossy red.

Structural + emotive takes a more graphic route. Black and white meet warm browns, smoky neutrals and shimmering silver, while geometry and architectural forms give interiors a strong sense of order. Yet there is warmth beneath the precision. Fragrant woods, tactile papers and textured glass invite touch, while scent becomes another layer of interior design through candles, diffusers and fragrances created specifically for interiors.

Then there is noble + fancy, the most decorative of the three. Think of it as a contemporary cabinet of curiosities: rich walnut, oxblood and botanical greens alongside faded lilac, dusty rose and softer floral tones. Historical and cultural references mingle with collectables, couture influences, sophisticated textiles and art glass, creating rooms with personality and a touch of the unexpected.

Across all three trends, materials are increasingly appreciated for more than their appearance. Texture, scent, craftsmanship and natural irregularities become part of how a space is understood and enjoyed.

Visitors will be able to see the three trend worlds brought to life through selected exhibitor products at Ambiente 2027, taking place at Messe Frankfurt from 29 January to 2 February 2027. The fair runs alongside Christmasworld on the same dates, while Creativeworld takes place from 29 January to 1 February 2027.

For 2027, the message is refreshingly open: good design doesn’t require everything to match. Some of the most interesting spaces emerge when different ideas are given room to coexist.
