Tonic Design and Zuckerman Sachs Architects collaboration
Some homes are defined by their architecture, others by their outlook. In this case, it was always about the view. Purchased for its sweeping panorama rather than the dated 1980s structure that occupied the site, the house was stripped back to its bare bones – floor slabs and columns – being reborn as a contemporary family home. Be inspired with Tonic Design.
Working alongside Zuckerman Sachs Architects, Tonic Design was commissioned to craft interiors that would honour the vista while creating a sophisticated, highly finished environment for a young family. The result is a study in restraint: bespoke detailing, hand-crafted furniture, and carefully imported finishes all quietly elevating the architecture, while ensuring the landscape remains the star. Luxurious yet never ostentatious, every space feels calibrated to balance ease of living with visual drama.
For Tonic Design, the project is emblematic of the studio’s design philosophy. Over more than two decades, the practice has become one of South Africa’s most influential voices in interiors and furniture design, its work celebrated for a distinctive language of clean lines, subtle innovation, and uncompromising craftsmanship. Their portfolio has garnered international attention, appearing in titles such as Wallpaper and on stages like Design Indaba, while earning admiration from design enthusiasts across the globe.
Here, their hand is unmistakable. The home is not a showcase of objects, but a considered backdrop for life unfolding against a cinematic horizon. A place where design recedes just enough for light and landscape to play centre stage, exactly as the client had imagined.
