Spotlight: Ilisi Interior Architectural Design

Ilisi Interior Architectural Design is the culmination of ideas, passions and dreams, represented in a visual and tactile environment. Head Interior Designer, Ada Strydom, shares some of her journey in establishing Ilisi and tells us about their latest inspiration and projects.

How would you describe your style?

I do have a very natural, yet true to concept style. Depending on the concept, I introduce the most extraordinary combination of styles for our clients to create a one of a kind masterpiece. By thinking outside the box and combining certain elements with their requirements, we present their dream space as well as execute everything.

Tell us about your journey up until this point…

Any space along with its psychology has fascinated me since I can remember. Walking into a building is like walking into the future. You never know what you are going to get. The way a space of a building can make you feel is fascinating to me. The psychology of interior design can be absolutely miraculous. Since I can remember, I have dreamed of designing and leaving my South African Design fingerprint on any type of space a client assigns to me. Design has been a lifelong dream for me.

I am blessed to have engraved my signature design fingerprint on my own home where my husband and I are currently building in the countryside – Platteland. Designing and building my own home was a true dream experience and it has been wonderfully executed so far.

What do you like most about working on interiors?

Thinking outside of the box and then showing the final transformed interior to the client. Their reaction to their dream coming true is amazing. Seeing a space change in so many different ways never gets old!

What inspires you and drives your design creations?

I find inspiration in everything that has a conceptual style, story, history, lesson or belief. By always thinking differently and uniquely… drives my creations.

When a client does want a design in a certain style, I go in-depth to research and experience the lifestyle when designing the space

How do you develop new concepts or creative design ideas?

I develop concepts with strong conceptual visuals in my mind that share rhythm, pattern, colour and so on. I also combine more than one style that acts as a contrast to the main concept, creating a more prominent feel and experience.

What projects have you most enjoyed?

1. The South African Inspired Hamptons Weekend Home in Harties

2. The Modern Farmhouse Kitchen

In your opinion, what is a good design?

A good design of an interior is when it isn’t boring… A good design has to leave an imprint in the mind of “wow this is different”. At the same time it should consist of practicality and exquisite one-of-a-kind visuals.

How do you combine beauty and function into the collection that you create?

We take our clients through a journey of their style and functionality preferences. Every space is different as like people are different. By fine-combing through likes and dislikes, we create a space that is a perfect fit for our clients in terms of function and beauty.

What project are you working on at the moment?

At the moment we are working on a bachelor home in Krugersdorp where we are designing the entire house. It has a modern native and fresh industrial style.

We are also working on a lobby entrance for a client in Waterfall Estate as well as a TV room for a client in Waterkloof Ridge.
