Epiphany Creations: Purpose, Passion and Intentional Design

At the heart of this philosophy is Dr Shana Mavee, Founder and Creative Director of Epiphany Design House. With an extraordinary career spanning academia, leadership, public governance and interior design, Dr Mavee brings a rare perspective to every project she undertakes. Her approach is grounded in the belief that great design is not about excess but about intention – creating interiors that enhance wellbeing, encourage connection and leave a lasting impact on the people who experience them.

Having evolved from the successful event styling business Epiphany Creations into the highly regarded Epiphany Design House, Epiphany Creations continues to demonstrate how beautifully considered spaces can transform not only interiors but the lives lived within them.

We caught up with Dr Shana Mavee to discuss her unique journey, the philosophy behind intentional design, and why purposeful, people-centred interiors are shaping the future of South African design.

1. Your journey is a unique blend of academia, leadership, and interior design. How has your background in Public Management and Governance influenced the way you approach creating meaningful spaces?

My journey has followed an unconventional path, but looking back, I realise that every chapter has always been interconnected. My background in Public Management and Governance taught me that every decision should be people-centred, purposeful, and sustainable. Those principles naturally carried over into design.

Whether I’m leading a business or designing a home, I begin by understanding the people I’m serving. Good governance is about creating environments where people can thrive, and I believe great design does exactly the same. A thoughtfully designed space has the power to improve wellbeing, inspire creativity, strengthen relationships, and even influence how we experience our daily lives – this is the beauty of well-designed systems. That human-centred perspective is at the heart of everything we create at Epiphany Design House.

2. You often say that “great design is not about excess; it is about intention.” What does intentional design mean to you, and how do you ensure every Epiphany Design House project reflects that philosophy?

Intentional design begins with asking “why” before asking “what.” So, every colour, texture, piece of furniture, and layout choice should serve a purpose rather than simply filling a space. For example, selecting calming neutral tones to create a sense of tranquillity, incorporating natural materials to add warmth, or designing an open layout that encourages connection and effortless movement – every element should contribute to both the beauty and functionality of the space.

For me, luxury isn’t defined by how expensive something is; it is defined by how thoughtfully it has been considered. A beautiful interior should function effortlessly while making the people who occupy it feel comfortable, inspired, and at peace.

3. Epiphany Creations began as an event curating and decorating company before evolving into Epiphany Design House. What inspired this transformation, and how has it shaped the brand’s vision today?

The transition felt like a natural evolution rather than a complete change of direction. Through event design, I discovered my passion for creating experiences through beautifully curated environments. While events are temporary, I found myself wanting to create spaces that would continue inspiring people long after the moment had passed.

The transformation was also shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, I was still in academia, adapting to lecturing online while, like so many others, working from home. As both my professional and personal lives became centred on my home, I found myself intentionally transforming my space for my family and me, creating pockets of calm, comfort, and inspiration during an incredibly uncertain time. That experience reinforced my belief that our surroundings profoundly affect our wellbeing and the importance of designing spaces that truly support how we live, work, and connect.

Interior design allows us to have a lasting impact on people’s everyday lives. It gives us the opportunity to shape the environments where families create memories, businesses innovate, and individuals find rest and inspiration.

Today, Epiphany Design House is built on the belief that design should elevate the human experience. Our vision extends beyond creating beautiful interiors. We strive to create spaces that enrich lives, tell meaningful stories, and stand the test of time.

4. You believe that every space should tell a story and reflect the people who live or work within it. How do you uncover a client’s personal story and translate it into a beautifully designed interior?

Listening is one of the most important parts of the design process.

Before discussing colours or furniture, I want to understand the people behind the project. How do they spend their mornings? What brings them joy? How do they entertain? What memories do they want their home or workspace to create? Sometimes it’s the smallest conversations that reveal the biggest design opportunities. Once we understand who our clients are, the design becomes deeply personal. We translate their personality into textures, materials, lighting, layouts, and carefully curated details that feel authentic rather than staged.

When clients walk into their completed space and say, “This feels like us,” that’s when I know we’ve succeeded.

5. As Founder and Creative Director of Epiphany Design House, what legacy do you hope to leave through your work, and how do you see the future of purposeful interior design evolving in South Africa?

I hope my legacy is one of purposeful transformation – not simply transforming spaces but transforming the way people experience them. Beyond creating beautiful interiors, I hope to inspire people to see design differently – to recognise that our environments influence how we think, feel, connect, and grow. If my work encourages even one person to approach their space with greater intention, then I know I’ve contributed something meaningful.

I want Epiphany Design House to be known for creating interiors that improve quality of life and demonstrate that thoughtful design can inspire confidence, connection, and wellbeing.

As a mother, this legacy is deeply personal. I hope my children grow up understanding that true success is not measured by what we accumulate, but by the impact we have on the lives of others. Through design, I want to teach them that every space has the potential to serve a purpose. More than building a business, I hope to inspire them to lead with creativity, empathy, integrity, and intention in whatever path they choose.

South Africa is filled with extraordinary creativity, cultural richness, and craftsmanship, and I believe the future of interior design lies in embracing these unique strengths. I see a growing appreciation for spaces that are sustainable, deeply personal, and locally inspired – this is beautiful, and it creates a sense of pride.

Ultimately, my greatest hope is that my work reminds people that the spaces we inhabit shape the lives we lead. When we design with intention, empathy, and purpose, we create environments that don’t just look beautiful; they help people flourish.
