Karoo Baba Sheepskin Interior Design: The Soft Life as a Material Choice

There is a reason certain rooms stay in the memory long after the view has been forgotten. It has nothing to do with thread count or ambient lighting — it is about how a room makes people feel the moment they step inside. Increasingly, that quality is becoming a material decision in sheepskin interior design. For Karoo Baba, the growing appreciation for sheepskin reflects a broader shift towards materials that prioritise comfort, authenticity and lasting quality.

Among the materials finding renewed relevance in contemporary interiors is sheepskin. Historically underestimated in many local design circles, it has long held a respected place within European and Scandinavian design aesthetics. Its inherent qualities — breathability, warmth retention, natural regulation, durability, and an extraordinarily luxurious texture — are precisely what elevated interiors are now specifying within sheepskin interior design.

Beyond performance, sheepskin offers something more intangible. Its soft embrace has the ability to create an immediate sense of comfort, grounding and calm, transforming the experience of a space through touch and presence alone.

This understanding of materiality sits at the heart of Karoo Baba. For years, the brand Karoo Baba has worked against the rustic associations often attached to sheepskin, developing a product language that is clean, precise and globally minded. From slippers and rugs to gilets, pet products and hospitality commissions, every piece is grounded in South African Merino sheepskin sourced directly from Karoo farms. It is a material born from a landscape that does not compromise, and neither does the brand.

This philosophy will be brought to life at Decorex Africa through the Soft Life Dream Room, located in Hall 4, Stand M35. Rather than a traditional product showcase, the installation presents a fully realised interior concept. A made bed set against stone. Natural forms positioned within structured spaces. Objects selected not because of how they are marketed, but because of what they are made from.

While the phrase “soft life” has increasingly become a design mood board category, Karoo Baba approaches it differently. For the brand, the concept is rooted in a considered relationship with material within sheepskin interior design. It is found in sheepskin that provides warmth without overheating, in a rug that retains its form for decades, and in a slipper so comfortable that guests never want to take it off.

These are not viewed as luxuries. Rather, they are the quiet, thoughtful decisions that make a space feel genuinely cared for.

For hospitality specifiers, residential interior designers, and anyone seeking materials that combine beauty with enduring performance, Karoo Baba offers an invitation to experience the difference firsthand at Decorex Africa, taking place at the CTICC from 25–28 June.
