Kobo Africa:Young Basotho Designers Collection
Weaving rich local heritage into modern-day designs, the Young Basotho Designers Collection (YBDC) of Basotho Heritage Blankets offers a fresh take on traditional motifs, such as the sabole (sword) and Likhomo (cow).
The latter, for instance, showcases the importance of the cow in Basotho culture. The design features a central cow, surrounded by hoof prints, symbolising the important role these animals play in key events such as weddings.
Locally made by female entrepreneurs from wool and acrylic, the collection includes seven unique designs in vibrant colourways, including the Litema design in Peacock and Gold and the Ngoale in Black and Scarlet.
The Young Designers Collection is available at Kobo Africa, a proudly South African business specialising in South African blankets and throws.
“‘Kobo’ means blanket in Sesotho, which perfectly encapsulates the heart and soul of Kobo Africa, which perfectly reflects our commitment to supporting local industries and celebrating African culture,” says founders and owners Natalie Matthews and Christina Close, who launched Kobo Africa in 2019.
Kobo Africa’s range includes traditional heritage blankets, including the iconic Basotho and Ndebele blankets, as well as the MyAfrica range, which celebrates the beauty of Africa.
