Mungo Design: A Purchase With a Purpose

Mungo Design has kickstarted the year with the launch of their new Kids of Kurland Kikoi, a project that was started in 2018. All the proceeds from the sale of this product are donated to the Crags Primary School to fund an additional teacher. It’s a purchase with a purpose.

In 2019 Mungo established MOVE, a CSR programme dedicated to empowering the community and protecting the environment. As part of an ongoing outreach programme, they facilitate an annual textile workshop at the Mungo Mill where a group of students from the Crags Primary School learn about textile production and get to design their
own kikoi.

Through a vote one kikoi is selected and a run is woven and sold at Mungo stores. All the proceeds from its sale are donated to the Kids of Kurland School Project – a charitable organisation that focuses on youth upliftment in the Kurland community. Through this project Mungo raises enough money to fund a much-needed additional teacher’s salary at the Crags Primary School.

“We are in the position to offer a unique kind of experience that educates and involves everyone in the process of understanding how textiles are and more importantly should be produced. We aim to link the visual experience with the principles we believe can help change the world. We promote the values of quality and longevity, re-use and recycle. It is important that we design things that last and that we share the importance of this.”

So every year Mungo invites the grade 7 class from Crags Primary to the Mungo Mill for an experience in how to give back without handing out, involving them in the process of helping to pay the salary for a teacher for their school.

Drawing from the raw artistic talent of an intuitive approach to combining colours, the winning combination is put into production to raise money for the Crags Primary School.
