Homemakers Expo: The Scoop on InHabit 2020

Every year the HOMEMAKERS Expo team chooses an Expo theme that reflects the latest trends in home improvement, home appliances, décor and home services.

Once again, HOMEMAKERS partnered with the University of Pretoria (UP) for the creation of the 2020 theme. This gives the Information Design students from UP  the opportunity to present a visual design concept that could become the theme for the HOMEMAKERS Expo. This year the winning theme InHabit is a concept created in 2019 by Designer Challenge winner Dian Labuschagne.

For him, InHabit translates to familiarity. In his opinion, anyone can live in a space, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the space is home.  He strongly believes there is a difference between a house and a home. A house is merely a structure that is occupied, and a home is where you’re comfortable. He says “you can live anywhere, but you can only InHabit the space you call your home”.

Stay Connected

The world is better connected than ever before, and despite our online culture, people are losing track of one another. We crave a connection to each other like never before. The 27th Johannesburg HOMEMAKERS Expo will be your place for connectivity. The Expo will connect visitors with the products and services they need to help them own their space.

InHabit is about improving the way people live in their homes and how they connect with everything around them. The 2020 Johannesburg HOMEMAKERS Expo will once again give visitors the chance to see, touch, feel and compare the latest home products and services.

It’s an opportunity to do more than merely occupy a space. It’s about developing a lifestyle where people truly InHabit spaces and boldly connect with those around them.

Show Features

Year after year, the HOMEMAKERS Expo selects a variety of show features to keep visitors entertained and educated. From DIY workshops to delicious eats, the Expo offers everything the expo goer wants to experience.

The InHabit Workshop is the place to be if you are ready to get creative. With interesting DIY demos from expert craftsmen – it’s obvious why this feature is an expo favourite! Visitors will find themselves at the heart of product development and get to experience how a range of DIY products are made to create that InHabit experience.

Learn how to InHabit your kitchen in a whole new way with the debut of The Garden Table. Be entertained while acquiring new skills taught by celebrity chefs, guests, and experts. The inspiration behind this much-anticipated show feature is the garden and utilise it to create delicious drinks and fancy food made from ingredients you can grow. Visitors can expect a fun-filled programme that will leave them skilled and inspired.

Another expo feature inspired by authentic African design styles is the Designer Spaces feature. Here visitors will see local interior designers create an authentic space in the Designer Spaces challenge. Designers are tasked to create a space inspired by the motherland, Africa.

The Industrial Design students from the University of Johannesburg are making a comeback at the Johannesburg HOMEMAKERS Challenge. Visitors to the Young Designers Challenge will be able to see the products that will potentially help them InHabit their spaces in the future.

If you have a knack for interior decorating and want access to the latest, custom-made products, then Truly Artisan is a show feature you cannot miss. It’s a treasure trove of artworks, cutting edge furniture and lighting designs, collector’s items, handcrafted décor pieces and natural products.

We all know that you cannot go to a HOMEMAKERS Expo and not pass through their foodie-haven. Indulge in everything from gourmet sushi and towering burgers to creatively cured biltong and delicious ice creams at the D’Vine Life show feature.
