A Joyful SoHo Loft By Designer Ghislaine Viñas

There is a sort of playfulness found in every room of this bright and modern SoHo loft. It has been skillfully designed by Ghislaine Viñas.

Ghislaine was born in the Netherlands, grew up in South Africa, and now runs a renowned interior design business in New York. As such, she evidently brings with her an international worldview. Her designs are often filled with colour, mixing modernism with whimsy.

The owners of this beautiful SoHo loft approached Ghislaine because they loved the way her designs had a ‘joy’ about them. They wanted her to bring this unique touch to their own home. They had already employed an architect to gut renovate the space. Now, they needed that eclectic and playful touch that Ghislaine brings so effortlessly.

An anchor for the design

For the designer, the dark tones in the kitchen become the anchor and starting point for her design. Even though she usually veers toward bright colours and energising hues, she felt that the combination of quartersawn European walnut and Alpi wood veneer in the kitchen, was a good place to start.

The living areas are open plan with pops of colour. As you can see, the wood, therefore, becomes a central feature here. The owners had purchased two large M. Crow puzzle paintings by BDDW founder Tyler Hays. This was to be placed in the dining room. Subsequently, this beautiful duo adds a richness of both colour and texture.

An ode to Alice

We love the whimsical touches that make every space feel special. It was the designer’s idea to create an oversize artwork for the hallway. She, therefore, blew up a Sir John Tenniel illustration from the original edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. She knew her clients loved the book and had the page scanned and enlarged and framed by Skyframe in New York.

In the baby room, a powder blue rug is combined with hypermodern elements. From a black Egg chair to Marset’s funky Tam Tam pendant. The room is subsequently a playful space with modern touches.

In the end, each room tells a story that relates to the whole – like chapters in a book. Furthermore, itt’s modern and creative and a fun place to enjoy life.
