From a Single Product to Market Leader: How Strategic Partnerships Powered Nuwkem’s Growth

From a single product to being a market leader: How partnership choices enabled Nuwkem’s growth

Starting a business and nurturing it into a successful source of income and employment is arguably one of the most rewarding things you can do. Any businessperson will tell you that it is not as easy as putting up a sign and announcing that you’re open for business, but the sense of achievement from knowing that your staff are able to fend for themselves thanks to your courage and sacrifices is second to none.

My partner and I founded Nuwkem Hygiene in 2006. The early years were difficult, starting off by offering a single product. A major turning point came when we had the opportunity to distribute Rubbermaid products. The support we received from Rubbermaid showed us how the right partnership could strengthen our own capabilities, and in 2017 we formalised that relationship and never looked back.

That experience taught me that a partnership can influence not only how a business grows, but also the standards it carries forward. Deciding whether to build capabilities internally or seek external support is one of the toughest challenges one can face as a leader, but the answer comes down to taking  into consideration what your business actually needs, rather than forcing expansion based on personal ambition. To illustrate, I know it is time to seek a partner when our growth is constrained by something we cannot build fast enough or cost-effectively in-house. In those moments, I ask myself where we create the most value and where a potential partner might be stronger.

My assessment of potential partners begins with quality. I look for organisations that truly believe in their products and services, stand behind their work, and share our deep commitment to customer satisfaction. Finding partners with complementary expertise or market access is crucial, but protecting our brand reputation remains my top priority.

This philosophy shapes our strategy at Nuwkem, where we focus on product quality and supply reliability while collaborating with partners who offer installation services, maintenance expertise, and regional reach. A partner might boast impressive capabilities, but if their values and service standards fail to align with ours, the relationship simply will not succeed over the long term. By taking this approach, we can scale without compromising the core areas where we deliver the greatest value.

Once we identify the right partner, we focus on setting expectations early, communicating clearly, and maintaining a steady rhythm of check-in visits and support. Product training and ongoing support form a core part of our strategy at Nuwkem. Our goal is not to create identical organisational cultures, but to ensure that our customers receive a consistent level of service regardless of who they interact with.

Strategic partnerships also allow us to overcome major barriers to expansion, such as entering new markets or building regional infrastructure, without requiring massive capital outlay for multiple branches or service staff. Beyond business efficiency, I see immense potential for partnerships to deliver broader societal benefits. In the washroom hygiene sector, closer collaboration between the private sector and government could vastly improve public access to essential facilities. The private sector has the technical know-how while the government has the reach and standards; by working together properly, we can ensure that basic essentials in public washrooms become a standard rather than a luxury.

A case in point: by partnering with teams across Africa and in South Africa who specialise in servicing and maintaining washroom hygiene dispensers and already possess extensive geographical coverage, we were able to expand our footprint without duplicating infrastructure.

In my opinion, it is vitally important to focus on relationships, because people ultimately do business with people. No amount of marketing or digital communication can ever replace the genuine trust that develops through direct, personal engagement. When entering a new market, you must be willing to spend time on the ground, understand local business practices, observe competitors, and learn how customers think and operate. Trust is earned slowly, and the focus on relationships often becomes the very foundation upon which successful expansion is built.

Looking back, Nuwkem’s journey from a single product to a market leader with a growing African footprint shows that sustainable growth is built one deliberate step at a time. Growth should never be pursued for its own sake. Staying true to what you do best, remaining open to learning, and building considered relationships are the way to go to ensure your business grows much further than it ever could in isolation.
