Up Close & Personal With Larry Forman – CEO of Metal Windows

For 60 years Metal Windows has built up a reputation for installing and refurbishing perfect fit, leak-free aluminium windows and doors in Cape Town. Today we chat to the CEO, Larry Forman about the benefits of investing in superior windows and doors.

How many years have you been in the industry?

I started my (part time) apprenticeship at MW in 1984, before the army and studying building science at UCT. I learned skills from the ground up and even now I am still responsible for training our technicians. After I graduated I joined MW full time in 1989.

What are some of the pros and cons of Steel windows vs Aluminium Windows?

Steel windows offer a slim profile and larger opening sizes, however, they require more maintenance (e.g. painting) vs Aluminium windows which offer more design flexibility and lower maintenance.
That said, steel windows have experienced a revival and are very on trend in design today. Steel windows are also more robust in the long term.

Can clients have flexibility in designing their windows and doors?

With Metal Windows all our products are customizable to suit the client’s design aesthetic. I have personally researched and developed a range of both Steel and Aluminium – Forman Brand profiles. Designed with Cape weather, durability, longevity and international trends as my criteria. Forman Brand systems are exclusive to Metal Windows and the designs are borne out of years of practical experience.

What is the benefit of replacing wood windows with steel or Aluminium?

Standard timber window quality is poor and windows require constant maintenance. They are also poorly suited to Cape weather. Benefits include excellent quality, durability, low maintenance and aesthetic appeal. Forman Brand Windows are a lasting investment.

What is the most innovative structure you have fabricated in your work?

Residentially – the steel and glass kitchen enclosure for chef Liam Tomlin. Commercially – the Forman F16 product used in The Harrington for Roam.

What is the latest trend in international design?

The latest trend is the slimline window and door profile. We have created our latest products. The Forman Brand F16 Aluminium slim profile with a sleek ‘steel look” inspired by the Bauhaus tradition. Our other innovation is the F7 steel system window which offers extremely slim sight lines while maintaining structural integrity.

What inspires you to keep designing and innovating in this industry?

I am inspired by young designers bringing new, fresh and out of the box ideas. I also find inspiration in time spent in my personal workshop developing ideas.
