Thebe Magugu Suite at Mount Nelson: African Luxury Design in Cape Town

At Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel in Cape Town, a new chapter in hospitality design unfolds with the introduction of the Thebe Magugu Suite—an immersive collaboration between award-winning South African fashion designer Thebe Magugu and Studio Landt, an interior design studio formed by the creative minds behind Weylandts. Known for his narrative-driven approach to fashion, Magugu extends his design language into interiors, translating identity, heritage and storytelling into a spatial experience.

Conceived as both a retreat and a cultural dialogue, the suite brings together English grandeur and African expression in a way that feels grounded yet contemporary. For Magugu—whose name translates to “he who protects our treasures”—the project reflects a continuation of his work: preserving and expressing African histories and identities through design.

The experience begins with a sense of arrival. Olive green tones and stone floors establish a calm foundation, leading into a lounge and dining area layered with references to Sotho culture. Hand-drawn wallpaper by Cara Saven, inspired by the mountains of Lesotho, introduces a graphic narrative, while sculptural lighting recalls the distinctive form of the Mokorotlo hat. A custom artwork by Mmangaliso Nzuza anchors the space, adding depthand presence.

Deep reds, earthy olive tones, and layered textures evoke a sense of warmth, stability, and calm presence.

Throughout, pleating—a signature of Magugu’s fashion language—appears in upholstery, textiles and lighting, creating continuity between garment and space. Upstairs, the palette deepens into warmer, more contemplative tones, where works by artists including Lorenzo Plaaitjies, Banele Khoza, Lulama Wolf, Trevor Stuurman and Zandile Tshabalala contribute to a layered visual narrative.

Adjacent to the suite, Magugu House extends the concept into a public-facing gallery and showroom. Its inaugural exhibition, By Our Own Hands, curated by Magugu and Julia Buchanan, explores themes of authorship, labour and material intelligence, featuring works by Zanele Muholi and Zizipho Poswa.

Set against views of Lion’s Head and the hotel’s iconic gardens, the suite offers more than accommodation. It presents a considered expression of contemporary African design, where fashion, art and interiors converge into a cohesive, lived experience.
