A New Design Era At InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town

Cape Town has no shortage of design icons, but few come with quite the history – or the views – of the Table Bay. Now, following an 18-month, R1 billion transformation, the landmark hotel has entered a striking new era as InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town, bringing a fresh design perspective to one of the V&A Waterfront’s most recognisable addresses.

Originally opened by Nelson Mandela in 1997, the hotel’s reimagining strikes a careful balance between old and new. Rather than erasing its past, the redesign draws on its extraordinary location, taking cues from the meeting of mountain, ocean and city to create interiors that feel distinctly connected to Cape Town.

Natural light plays an important role throughout, alongside refined materials, considered detailing and a more contemporary approach to luxury. The hotel now comprises 306 guestrooms, including 40 suites, with spaces designed to maximise panoramic views while introducing a warmer, more residential sense of comfort.

“This has never been simply about transforming a building,” says Joanne Selby, General Manager of InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town. “It has been about honouring the legacy of an iconic hotel while creating experiences that feel contemporary, personal and distinctly InterContinental.”

The transformation extends well beyond the rooms

Reception and public areas have been completely reimagined, while a new Club InterContinental Lounge, SPA InterContinental, Fitness Studio and elevated pool terrace introduce further layers to the design story.

There is plenty new on the food and design front, too. Flint & Fennel, the hotel’s signature restaurant, brings a refined approach to all-day dining, while Le Bistrot de JAN introduces chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen’s French bistro concept to Cape Town. At The Botanist’s Table, the Cape’s extraordinary botanical heritage provides inspiration for the cocktail offering, while Solandra brings a more relaxed mood to the poolside setting overlooking the Granger Bay Precinct.

The hotel officially celebrated its new chapter with The Art of Arrival, an immersive opening event that took guests through its reimagined spaces and design story – even recreating the sensation of moving through Table Mountain’s famous cloud cover.

For Amith Khanna, Head of Franchise, India, Middle East & Africa at IHG Hotels & Resorts, that connection to place is fundamental: “Every InterContinental hotel is shaped by its destination, and InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town is no exception. From its thoughtfully reimagined interiors to its intuitive service and exceptional culinary offering, the hotel delivers the meaningful luxury experiences that today’s global traveller seeks.”

As Cape Town’s first InterContinental hotel, the transformation brings an international luxury name to a familiar local landmark. More importantly, from a design perspective, it demonstrates how an icon can move forward without losing the sense of place and history that made it memorable in the first place.
