Perfect Your Potting Game with Flora Style
Part of the verdant Hingham Nursery set-up in Durban, Flora Style focuses on all things floral and fabulous – with an extra dose of style.
Flora Style by Hingham was born out of owner Julie Scragg’s love of planters great and small.
Today, Julie imports a wide range of planters, including the stylish, lightweight Japi planters all the way from Brazil.
To help fellow plant lovers up their potting game, here Flora Style shares some ideas, tops and tricks for crating on-trend pot-plant clusters – inside or out.
Keep it simple
While you can go wild with shapes, sizes, textures and colours, more restrained groupings offer a more elegant result. Keep it simple by opting for one style and colour pot and vary the size or height for visual interest.
Try: Flat Japi Window Box
Proportions matter
A tall plant in a tiny squat pot? A long thin plant in a huge round pot? It’s easy to guess that these combos will look odd. The best pot and plant combos keep proportions in mind – tall, slim plants in high, narrow pots and compact plants or those with a trailing habit in shorter, wider pots.
Try; Conic Slim Japi Pots
Play the odds
When it comes to grouping together planters, an easy way to achieve a laid-back yet stylish effect is to group together an odd number of pots. Three is our lucky number.
Try: Bios Japi Planters
Add colour
While a neutral selection of planters creates a stylish base, you can absolutely add colour and contrast by filling pots with plants with different-coloured foliage and flowers.
Try: Lagoon Round Japi Planter
Layer plants
While you can play with different height pots to achieve a layered effect, another way to do this is by layering plants: think ground cover, trailing plant, small flowering annuals and an ornamental tree for instance.
Try: Innovare Maggiore Japi Planter
